Space News ,World :- In a groundbreaking discovery, scientists using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) have detected enigmatic radio waves at the core of the Milky Way's second-brightest globular cluster, 47 Tucanae. The signal, believed to be emitted from a potential medium-sized black hole, would mark the first-ever detection of its kind.Globular clusters, ancient star groupings scattered throughout our galaxy, are known for their densely packed stars. 47 Tucanae, boasting over a million stars within a 120-light-year diameter sphere, is observable even with the naked eye.The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) team, conducting a comprehensive 450-hour radio measurement campaign with ATCA, has produced the most detailed radio image of 47 Tucanae to date. Positioned approximately 14,500 light-years from the sun, the peculiar radio wave source was pinpointed at the cluster's center.Researchers speculate that the signal may originate from either a medium-sized black hole or a pulsar—a rapidly spinning neutron star emitting radio waves. The discovery of a medium-sized black hole would represent a scientific breakthrough, bridging the gap between stellar black holes and supermassive black holes found at galaxy centers.Intermediate-mass black holes, believed to exist in globular clusters, have eluded clear detection until now. Alessandro Paduano, lead author of the study and former Ph.D. student at Curtin University, notes, "If this signal turns out to be a black hole, it would be a highly significant discovery and the first-ever radio detection of one inside a cluster."The ATCA image of 47 Tucanae rivals the anticipated images from the Square Kilometer Array Observatory (SKAO), set to become the world's most sensitive radio telescope upon completion later this decade. The SKAO, currently under construction in Western Australia and South Africa, comprises thousands of radio antennas.Tim Galvin, a research scientist at CSIRO and co-author of the study, highlights the project's technological advancements, stating, "Alessandro's research represents a culmination of years of research and technological advancements, and ATCA's ultra-deep image of 47 Tucanae represents just the beginning of the discoveries that are yet to come."Arash Bahramian, overseeing the project at Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy, emphasizes the achievement of achieving SKA-quality science with current-generation telescopes. He envisions the technique's future role in enhancing the power of SKAO to detect the faintest cosmic objects, offering a glimpse into the exciting capabilities of the next generation of radio telescopes.

Defense News ,Mexico :- Mexico announced on Monday that it had detected the entry of US military weapons into the country, attributing the phenomenon to firearms trafficking from its northern neighbor, which it claims is contributing to drug cartel-related violence.During a news conference, Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena revealed that the Mexican defense ministry had notified Washington about the inflow of arms designated "for the exclusive use of the US army." Urging the need for an immediate investigation, Barcena refrained from providing further details on the matter. The issue of arms smuggling was a focal point of discussions between the two nations in Washington on Friday, where Barcena and other high-ranking Mexican officials were on an official visit.Mexico has consistently held the United States responsible, citing its lenient gun laws as the catalyst for the continuous flow of weapons to Mexican cartels, often funded by drug sales to US consumers. The Mexican government has taken legal action by filing two lawsuits in US courts against the firearms industry. On Monday, US Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, emphasized that curbing the flow of weapons from the US to Mexico is a priority for President Joe Biden. Salazar noted that 70 percent of the weapons causing violence in Mexico originate from the United States.Mexican authorities estimate that over half a million weapons are trafficked into the country annually from the United States. Despite Mexico's stringent controls on weapons sales, obtaining firearms legally is nearly impossible, leading to the prevalence of drug-related violence involving firearms.Since 2006, when the Mexican government deployed the military to combat drug trafficking, there have been over 420,000 murders, with the majority attributed to criminal gangs.

Defense News ,Israel :- In a significant escalation of the conflict against Hamas, the Israeli military reported on Tuesday that twenty-four soldiers lost their lives in the Gaza Strip, marking the highest single-day death toll for Israeli forces in the current war. The fatalities occurred as Israel intensified its most extensive ground assault of 2024.Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari disclosed that 21 soldiers were killed in an explosion when two buildings, strategically mined for demolition, collapsed after militants launched grenades at a nearby tank. Additionally, the military reported three soldiers killed in a separate attack in southern Gaza.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating, "Yesterday we experienced one of our most difficult days since the war erupted." He pledged to continue the fight until "absolute victory" in honor of the fallen heroes.Defence Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized the profound implications of the conflict, stating that it would shape Israel's future "for decades to come." Gallant underscored the necessity of sacrificing fighters to achieve the war's goals. The deaths coincide with Israel's extensive ground campaign into the western part of Khan Younis, the primary city in southern Gaza. Gazans report difficulties in rescue operations due to Israeli blockades and hospital storming, leaving the wounded and dead inaccessible. Hospitals, including Khan Younis's main Nasser hospital and Al-Khair, faced Israeli troop incursions, hampering medical efforts.Israel justifies its actions by claiming that Hamas fighters operate in and around hospitals, designating them as legitimate targets, a claim contested by hospital staff and Hamas. The conflict, which aims to eliminate Hamas, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Palestinian authorities report over 25,000 confirmed deaths in Gaza, with widespread destruction and displacement of the enclave's population.Internationally, the conflict has sparked discontent within Israel, with growing criticism of Netanyahu's war strategy. Netanyahu's recent declaration opposing an independent Palestinian state has caused a rift with traditional ally Washington, which historically supported a peace process leading to Palestinian statehood.Relatives of hostages held in Gaza have called for intensified efforts to bring them home, even if it means scaling back the military campaign. Some members of Netanyahu's war cabinet, including former military chief-of-staff Gadi Eisenkot, have expressed doubts about the campaign's effectiveness and called for swift elections to restore public confidence. The conflict's impact has extended beyond the region, contributing to increased violence in the Middle East, particularly in areas where Iran-aligned groups operate, such as Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. The Houthi movement in Yemen, aligned with Iran, claims to support Gaza and has targeted shipping in the Red Sea. The U.S. and Britain, responding to these developments, conducted additional air strikes against the Houthis.

Defense News ,India :- On Monday, U.S. and British forces, with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands, conducted a new series of strikes in Yemen, aiming at a Houthi underground storage site and disabling missile and surveillance capabilities used by the Iran-aligned group against Red Sea shipping, as confirmed by the Pentagon. The Houthis, who dominate the most populous regions of Yemen, claim their attacks are in solidarity with Palestinians amidst Israel's strikes on Gaza. However, the repercussions of these Houthi actions extend beyond regional tensions, as they disrupt global shipping and raise concerns about potential global inflation. The situation has also heightened fears of broader instability in the Middle East, stemming from the fallout of the Israel-Hamas conflict. In this recent response, the joint statement from the U.S., Britain, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands outlined strikes at eight different locations in Yemen. Approximately 25 to 30 munitions, including those launched from a U.S. aircraft carrier, were employed, according to a senior U.S. military official who spoke on condition of anonymity.Despite eight rounds of previous strikes in the past month, Houthi attacks on shipping persist. U.S. officials assert that the strikes have, nevertheless, hampered the Houthis' ability to execute complex attacks, though specific figures on the destruction of missiles, radar, drones, or other military capabilities remain undisclosed.British Defence Minister Grant Shapps stated that the latest strikes were carried out in self-defense, aiming to further diminish Houthi stockpiles and their capacity to pose a threat to global trade.President Joe Biden, acknowledging the limitations of airstrikes in halting Houthi attacks, asserted that the military action would continue. The broader strategy concerning Yemen seeks to weaken Houthi militants without an explicit goal of defeating the group or directly confronting Iran, their main sponsor. The current strategy involves a combination of limited military strikes and sanctions, intending to prevent a wider Middle East conflict while penalizing the Houthis for their Red Sea shipping attacks. The consequences are already visible, with container vessels opting to pause or divert from the Red Sea route leading to the Suez Canal. Many ships are compelled to take the longer journey via the Cape of Good Hope instead, disrupting the traditional and faster freight route from Asia to Europe.

Defense News ,India :- In a significant move towards modernization, the Indian Army has initiated the deployment of logistics drones to replace its long-standing reliance on robust mules for transporting essential military supplies. For over a century, these surefooted animals have been instrumental in ferrying crucial loads to forward border posts that lack proper roads or tracks. This shift towards logistics drones is a pivotal component of the army's ongoing "force restructuring and optimization" initiative, aiming to reduce manpower by approximately 100,000 personnel by the year 2027, as highlighted in a report by The Times of India. In addition to drones, the army plans to utilize robotic mules and all-terrain vehicles to deliver supplies across challenging terrains and under extreme weather conditions. As part of this modernization effort, the Indian Army has set a target to disband its entire animal transport fleet by 2025. Already, steps have been taken to decrease the number of "mountain artillery mules" by 1,500, and by the end of the decade, over 3,300 "general service mules" responsible for transporting rations, fuel, water, and ammunition will be retired. In a gesture of recognition for their years of service, retired mules are expected to receive commendation cards from the Indian military. This symbolic acknowledgment underscores the invaluable role these animals have played in supporting the armed forces over the years. To facilitate the transition to modern logistics solutions, the Indian Army has awarded contracts totaling 320 crore Indian rupees ($38.5 million) for the procurement of 563 logistics drones, as reported by The Times of India. These unmanned systems are specifically designed to operate in high-altitude areas, surpassing 12,000 feet (3,657 meters). Sources indicate that these drones will play a crucial role in last-mile delivery to troops stationed along the borders, effectively reducing the dependency on soldiers, porters, and animal transport companies for transporting supplies and ammunition. This strategic move not only marks a technological leap for the Indian Army but also aligns with global trends in military logistics, emphasizing efficiency, reduced manpower, and enhanced capabilities in challenging terrains.

Defense News ,India :- Amidst the strained relations between India and the Maldives following the election of Beijing-leaning Mohamed Muizzu as President of the archipelago in November, India is closely monitoring the movement of another Chinese survey and research vessel equipped with advanced surveillance equipment. The vessel, named Xiang Yang Hong 03, entered the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) through the Sunda Strait of Indonesia on Monday morning. An official from the Indian defense establishment revealed that the Chinese vessel is anticipated to reach the Maldives by the first week of February. However, the journey has encountered a setback as Sri Lanka denied permission for the ship to dock at one of its ports. "The Indian Navy is closely monitoring its movements," stated the official. The Indian Navy typically employs a range of assets, including P-8I long-range maritime patrol aircraft, warships, and MQ-9B Sea Guardian drones, to track Chinese vessels in the IOR. Some of these resources are currently deployed on the western seaboard to address concerns related to piracy and drone attacks in the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea.India has consistently expressed objections to Sri Lanka about allowing "dual-use" Chinese ships to dock at its ports, as these vessels are known to map oceanographic data and engage in activities relevant to navigation and submarine operations in the IOR. Past instances, such as the docking of the Chinese survey vessel Shi Yan-6 in Colombo last October, have raised concerns. The visit of the Chinese research and space-tracking vessel Yuan Wang-5 to Hambantota in August 2022 had resulted in a significant diplomatic dispute between India and Sri Lanka. These Chinese vessels, equipped with advanced sensors and electronic equipment, are involved in snooping, monitoring satellite launches, and tracking the trajectories of ballistic missiles test-fired by India in the IOR.The recent decision of President Muizzu to prioritize a visit to China and sign various bilateral agreements to strengthen the strategic partnership between China and the Maldives adds another layer of complexity for India. As China maintains a significant naval presence in the IOR, with six to eight warships deployed at any given time, along with research and spy vessels, India is faced with the challenge of navigating its relations with the Maldives in this dynamic geopolitical environment.
