Defense News ,U.S :- In the coming days, the United States is poised to finalize a contract with the Polish defense industry, specifically with Mesko, a subsidiary of Poland's state-owned defense group PGZ (Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa). The agreement involves the procurement of several hundred Piorun man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS), demonstrating the growing collaboration between the two nations.
Developed by Mesko, the Piorun MANPADS is a highly effective air defense system designed to target a range of airborne threats, including aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, and winged rockets. Notably, the system boasts a proximity sensor fuse for precise targeting of close-passing threats. Its modernized launcher, equipped with additional day and thermal vision sights, enhances operational capabilities in diverse conditions, including nighttime engagements.
This impending contract marks the second agreement between the Polish defense industry and the United States, following a previous undisclosed deal signed in late 2021 for an unspecified number of Piorun systems. The Piorun system, already in service with the Polish Armed Forces, has gained global recognition, resulting in contracts with various nations, including Estonia, Norway, Latvia, and Moldova.
Noteworthy is Poland's commitment to supporting Ukraine's military capabilities, as evidenced by the donation of Piorun systems. This move underscores the strategic partnerships and alliances formed around this advanced air defense technology, solidifying Poland's position as a key player in the international defense arena.
