Israeli Forces Suffer 21 Troops Casualties in Gaza Assault, Highest Single-Day Toll

Defense News ,Israel :- In a significant escalation of the conflict against Hamas, the Israeli military reported on Tuesday that twenty-four soldiers lost their lives in the Gaza Strip, marking the highest single-day death toll for Israeli forces in the current war. The fatalities occurred as Israel intensified its most extensive ground assault of 2024.

Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari disclosed that 21 soldiers were killed in an explosion when two buildings, strategically mined for demolition, collapsed after militants launched grenades at a nearby tank. Additionally, the military reported three soldiers killed in a separate attack in southern Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating, "Yesterday we experienced one of our most difficult days since the war erupted." He pledged to continue the fight until "absolute victory" in honor of the fallen heroes.

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized the profound implications of the conflict, stating that it would shape Israel's future "for decades to come." Gallant underscored the necessity of sacrificing fighters to achieve the war's goals.

The deaths coincide with Israel's extensive ground campaign into the western part of Khan Younis, the primary city in southern Gaza. Gazans report difficulties in rescue operations due to Israeli blockades and hospital storming, leaving the wounded and dead inaccessible. Hospitals, including Khan Younis's main Nasser hospital and Al-Khair, faced Israeli troop incursions, hampering medical efforts.

Israel justifies its actions by claiming that Hamas fighters operate in and around hospitals, designating them as legitimate targets, a claim contested by hospital staff and Hamas.

The conflict, which aims to eliminate Hamas, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Palestinian authorities report over 25,000 confirmed deaths in Gaza, with widespread destruction and displacement of the enclave's population.

Internationally, the conflict has sparked discontent within Israel, with growing criticism of Netanyahu's war strategy. Netanyahu's recent declaration opposing an independent Palestinian state has caused a rift with traditional ally Washington, which historically supported a peace process leading to Palestinian statehood.

Relatives of hostages held in Gaza have called for intensified efforts to bring them home, even if it means scaling back the military campaign. Some members of Netanyahu's war cabinet, including former military chief-of-staff Gadi Eisenkot, have expressed doubts about the campaign's effectiveness and called for swift elections to restore public confidence.

The conflict's impact has extended beyond the region, contributing to increased violence in the Middle East, particularly in areas where Iran-aligned groups operate, such as Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. The Houthi movement in Yemen, aligned with Iran, claims to support Gaza and has targeted shipping in the Red Sea. The U.S. and Britain, responding to these developments, conducted additional air strikes against the Houthis.
