Defense News ,Russia :- In a recent announcement, the Russian government revealed the commissioning of the Admiral Golovko, the nation inaugural frigate specifically designed for deploying Zircon hypersonic missiles. During the flag-raising ceremony on December 25, President Vladimir Putin disclosed plans for the Severnaya Verf shipyard to construct a series of small- and medium-displacement corvettes by 2035, all armed with Zircon missiles, according to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.Despite these ambitious plans, skepticism looms among experts regarding Russia capacity to simultaneously develop both Zircon-equipped vessels and the missiles themselves within the specified timeline. Pavel Luzin, a senior fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis, cautioned that the current production remains more of a piece-by-piece approach rather than a full-scale serial production.Luzin suggested that the vessels might feature a universal launcher incorporating Kalibr, Oniks, and Zircon missiles. Due to the higher cost of Zircon missiles, he anticipates that the primary anti-ship armament of these vessels will consist of Kalibr and Oniks, with limited Zircon carriers available. The Severnaya Verf shipyard, a subsidiary of United Shipbuilding Corp., currently holds a contract to construct or prepare seven Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates. However, concerns arise about the shipyard capabilities, including the lack of a new boathouse and the need for repairs, modernization, and additional equipment.Additionally, the Steregushchiy-class corvettes under projects 20380 and 20385 are slated to be armed with Zircons. Despite plans for a fleet of 29 corvettes, challenges persist due to sanctions affecting the availability and affordability of high-quality components for radar complexes and diesel engines.Meanwhile, doubts surround the production of the Lider-class destroyer, with the general director of United Shipbuilding Corp., Aleksey Rakhmanov, expressing skepticism. Moreover, Russian media reports indicate that the battlecruiser Pyotr Velikiy is scheduled for decommissioning. In a separate development, Ukrainian aircraft reportedly damaged a Russian ship, Novocherkassk, moored off Crimea in the Black Sea. The attack is seen as a setback in Russia ongoing invasion of Ukraine, raising questions about the future of Western aid and boosting Ukrainian morale after recent battlefield disappointments. The Novocherkassk, a 360-foot landing ship, was targeted with guided missiles, leading to an explosion in the port. Ukrainian authorities claim the ship was likely carrying ammunition and possibly drones, asserting its destruction.

Defense News , U.S :- The entire V-22 Osprey program is now under scrutiny by the US Congress as it initiates an investigation following four fatal crashes within a span of 20 months. The most recent incident, in which eight American soldiers lost their lives, occurred when an Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft crashed off the coast of Japan during a routine training mission last month.Prompted by this tragic event, both Tokyo and Washington have temporarily grounded their V-22 fleets, initiating separate investigations and search and rescue missions. The US House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Accountability, on December 21, requested safety records for the Osprey from Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, with the requested documents expected to be delivered by January 4.Committee chairman James Comer expressed concern that, despite statistical data suggesting the Osprey is not considered as dangerous as some other military aircraft, most fatalities associated with it have occurred during training exercises rather than combat operations. The committee aims to ensure transparency, accountability, and a thorough understanding of steps taken to mitigate potential mechanical risks, particularly given the substantial investment of taxpayer money in the V-22 Osprey program. With over 450 Ospreys purchased for the military at a reported cost of $120 million each, the committee seeks to comprehend how the Defense Department manages the balance between these expenditures and the assurance of military capabilities and readiness. While acknowledging the advantages that Ospreys bring to combat scenarios, the committee underscores the necessity of prioritizing the safety of servicemembers. This inquiry follows a series of fatal incidents involving Ospreys, including crashes in Norway and California in March and April 2022, respectively, as well as a tragic incident in Australia in August of the same year. These events have collectively claimed the lives of more than 50 US service members since 1992, prompting heightened scrutiny into the safety and effectiveness of the V-22 Osprey program.

Defense News , UK :- In a recent development, Britain (UK) has announced its decision to dispatch the Royal Navy warship, HMS Trent, to the waters off Guyana, marking a strategic move in response to the renewed territorial tensions between the South American nation and Venezuela. The deployment comes in the wake of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro revival of his country century-old claim to the oil-rich Essequibo region, a move that has significantly heightened regional concerns.Scheduled to arrive later this month, HMS Trent will engage in diplomatic and military activities in the region, according to the UKs Ministry of Defence (MoD). The decision to send the patrol vessel is seen as a proactive measure to demonstrate solidarity and support for Guyana, a former British colony grappling with the territorial dispute. While both Venezuela and Guyana recently agreed not to resort to force in resolving the disagreement, tensions have been escalating, particularly after Guyana issued licenses for oil exploration in the disputed Essequibo region. The region, constituting about two-thirds of Guyana territory, has long been claimed by Caracas.Although the vessel will not dock in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, due to shallow ports, the move is intended as a symbolic gesture to emphasize diplomatic and military backing. UK Foreign Minister David Rutley, who visited Guyana earlier this month, emphasized the importance of respecting sovereign borders and affirmed London commitment to safeguarding the territorial integrity of Guyana through international cooperation.Venezuelan President Maduro recent referendum, in which officials claim 95 percent of voters supported declaring Venezuela the rightful owner of Essequibo, has further heightened tensions. Maduro has initiated legal maneuvers to establish a Venezuelan province in Essequibo and has instructed the state oil company to issue licenses for oil extraction in the disputed region.Guyana President Irfaan Ali has strongly condemned these actions, labeling them a "grave threat to international peace and security." As the situation unfolds, the deployment of HMS Trent serves as a visible manifestation of Britain commitment to supporting its former colony in the face of escalating territorial disputes in the region.
