BERN, Switzerland — Production of Switzerland’s F-35A Lightning II fighter aircraft is progressing at Leonardo’s Cameri facility in Italy, where the first Swiss fuselage section has been assembled with a wing, according to Switzerland’s federal defence procurement agency, Armasuisse. The fuselage section carries serial number MJ-4 and will form part of aircraft J-6004. Its matching wing is also being manufactured at Cameri. Once structural work is completed, the fuselage and attached wings will be transported to Lockheed Martin’s facility in Fort Worth, Texas, for integration with the remaining aircraft components. Switzerland selected the F-35A in 2021 under its Air2030 modernization programme to replace its F/A-18 Hornets and remaining F-5 Tigers. A 2022 contract for 36 aircraft was originally valued at approximately 6.035 billion Swiss francs. Higher costs linked to inflation, raw materials and other factors later affected the programme. In late 2025 and early 2026, the Swiss Federal Council decided to procure the maximum number of aircraft possible within the voter-approved financial framework of approximately 6 billion Swiss francs. Current projections indicate around 30 aircraft, with the final number depending on future production-lot contracts negotiated by the U.S. government. Main assembly of the first Swiss F-35A began earlier in 2026 at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Marietta, Georgia. The first eight U.S.-built aircraft are scheduled to be based at Ebbing Air National Guard Base, Arkansas, from mid-2027 for Swiss pilot and ground personnel training before being progressively transferred to Switzerland. Overall deliveries are planned from 2027 to 2030. The first F-35A produced at Cameri is expected to reach Switzerland in mid-2028, while J-6004 is scheduled to arrive at the end of 2029. Switzerland plans to introduce the aircraft at three military airfields, beginning at Payerne in mid-2028, followed by Meiringen in 2030 and Emmen in 2032. Cameri is Europe’s only F-35 final assembly and checkout facility and one of three worldwide, alongside Fort Worth and Nagoya, Japan. The site can produce up to 20 aircraft annually, manufactures about one-third of all F-35 wings, and produces F-35A and F-35B aircraft for Italy. The F-35 programme involves more than 2,100 suppliers worldwide. Italy is one of five European partner nations, alongside the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Denmark and Norway. The centre fuselage is manufactured in Germany, while the rear fuselage is produced in the United Kingdom. Armasuisse said production of Swiss F-35A components at Cameri reflects the programme’s international and European industrial structure. Switzerland considers geographical proximity, industrial cooperation and security cooperation with European partner countries important elements of the programme.

LANCASHIRE, UK — BAE Systems has released around six minutes of new footage showing the United Kingdom’s Combat Air Flying Demonstrator under construction at its facilities in Lancashire. The footage provides a new view of the aircraft as its major structural sections continue to take shape. The demonstrator is the UK’s first crewed combat air demonstrator in more than 40 years, following the Experimental Aircraft Programme (EAP), which first flew in 1986. The aircraft is being developed as part of the UK’s Team Tempest effort to test and mature technologies and engineering processes that will support the country’s contribution to the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), the joint UK-Italy-Japan programme for a future combat aircraft. The demonstrator itself is a UK-only programme and is not a prototype of the final GCAP fighter. Aviation Week reported in June that around 75% of the aircraft by volume had been manufactured, with major structural sections having been in production for between 12 and 18 months. BAE Systems said in July that more than 11,500 parts had been designed and released, representing about 90% of the aircraft’s overall weight. Around half of the main aircraft structure was then in final assembly. The front, centre and rear fuselage sections are being assembled at BAE Systems’ Samlesbury facility. The large cranked or cropped-delta wings and vertical stabilisers are being produced at the nearby Warton facility. Three sets of wings and stabilisers have been produced, with one set of each intended for structural testing. The demonstrator uses advanced digital engineering and manufacturing methods. BAE Systems has highlighted the use of digital design, simulation, robotics, additive manufacturing and other manufacturing techniques as part of the programme.   Aircraft Design and Testing The demonstrator is a twin-engine, piloted supersonic aircraft and will use Eurojet EJ200 engines with modified nozzles. It is larger than the Eurofighter Typhoon and has two internal weapons bays in the centre fuselage, positioned ahead of the main landing gear. The aircraft is being used to examine technologies and design approaches relevant to future combat aircraft, including low-observability features, propulsion, aerodynamics, flight controls and internal systems. The programme has already made extensive use of simulation. Test pilots from BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and the Royal Air Force have completed more than 300 hours of simulator flying on the demonstrator. BAE Systems says the simulator work is being used to assess flight-control systems and aircraft handling before the aircraft begins real flight trials. A modified Boeing 757 known as the Excalibur flying testbed is also being used for testing new sensing and communications technologies for the future combat-air programme. BAE Systems said in July that the aircraft had completed modifications and was ready for the next stage of flight trials.   Workforce and Industrial Base More than 1,000 people across the UK have worked on the demonstrator programme, while more than 100 UK suppliers and organisations have contributed to the project. Around 150 people in early-career roles have received training through the programme, and about 200 people who worked on the demonstrator have since moved into GCAP roles. The demonstrator is intended to provide experience in designing, manufacturing and preparing a new combat aircraft for flight while developing engineering and manufacturing skills needed for future programmes.   Flight Schedule Final assembly of the fuselage sections is progressing, with the completed fuselage expected to move from Samlesbury to Warton for mating with the wings. The programme is targeting a power-on milestone in the second half of 2027, followed by completion of the aircraft toward the end of 2027. Flight testing is planned to begin around the end of 2027 or early 2028, depending on the programme timeline. The flight-test programme is expected to examine areas including aircraft handling, propulsion, airflow, low-observability characteristics and internal weapons release.   Link to GCAP The Combat Air Flying Demonstrator is intended to reduce technical and manufacturing risks before the full GCAP aircraft programme progresses further. Data and lessons from the programme are being shared with GCAP partners in a controlled manner. GCAP is being developed by the UK, Italy and Japan. On July 3, 2026, the GCAP Agency awarded the industrial joint venture Edgewing a £4.6 billion contract for the next stage of the aircraft’s design, including establishing requirements and testing activities. The UK has also committed £8.6 billion to GCAP over four years under its Defence Investment Plan. The final GCAP aircraft is planned to enter service from 2035 and is intended to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon in UK and Italian service and the F-2 in Japanese service. The UK demonstrator therefore serves as a separate test and technology programme rather than a production version of the future GCAP fighter. Its main purpose is to demonstrate technologies, engineering methods and manufacturing processes that can be carried into the next-generation combat-air programme.

ROME — A fire followed by a powerful explosion occurred Thursday afternoon at the KNDS Ammo Italy ammunition facility in Colleferro, about 50–60 kilometers southeast of Rome. The plant, formerly known as Simmel Difesa, produces medium- and large-caliber ammunition for ground and naval forces, along with solid propellants for missiles and aerospace vehicles. The site covers about 100 hectares and is classified as a high-risk industrial facility under Italy’s Seveso regulations.   BREAKING:A large explosion and fire hit a munitions plant in Colleferro, south of Rome, Italy.The blast occurred at the plant owned by the major Italian defense manufacturer KNDS Ammo Italy, which produces medium- and large-caliber ammunition and solid rocket fuels. 🇮🇹 pic.twitter.com/MM1PuWXEyG — Visegrád 24 (@visegrad24) August 13, 2026   According to local reports citing emergency services and authorities, the first alert was received around 2:45 p.m. local time. The fire started in the powder-pressing workshop before the explosion. The blast was heard in nearby towns including Artena, Valmontone, Labico, Paliano and Serrone. Videos and eyewitness reports showed smoke and flames at the site. Firefighters, Carabinieri and other emergency teams responded to the facility near the Quarto Chilometro/Via Ariana area toward Artena. Operations were complicated by the risk of further detonations. The affected area was reported to be limited to part of the production and storage zone. No deaths or injuries were reported. Around 24 workers were at the facility and all were accounted for and safe. The mayor of Colleferro said the explosion involved a mixer used in the production process. The Carabinieri and Velletri prosecutor’s office have opened an investigation. The preliminary focus is on the fire, but the exact cause remains under investigation and will require technical assessments.   Second European Ammunition Plant Incident This Week The Colleferro explosion follows a August 10 fire and explosions at an EMCO defense plant near Belitsa, close to Tryavna in central Bulgaria. The facility is involved in ammunition assembly, loading and related activities. Workers were evacuated, with no injuries reported. Secondary fires and unexploded materials required further safety operations. The cause remains under investigation, while EMCO has ruled out human error. KNDS Ammo Italy is part of the Franco-German KNDS defense group. The Colleferro site has more than a century of explosives and ammunition production history, including earlier ownership by Bombrini Parodi Delfino. The company also operates a demilitarization facility in nearby Anagni and supplies medium- and large-caliber ammunition to more than 40 countries. Italian authorities continue to secure and monitor the Colleferro facility as the investigation continues.

WARSAW, POLAND — Poland is considering sending another batch of missiles for Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, with a final decision expected in the coming days, Deputy Defense Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said in an interview with RMF FM. She said Poland’s national security remains the main consideration, but the recent Russian missile incident in Polish airspace has influenced the assessment. Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz is currently leaning toward approving another transfer. “Despite all the political fuss there was earlier about whether we were right to hand over the missiles, today he leans toward sending more, because he would rather see a missile like that shot down over Ukrainian territory than have it fly into ours,” Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said. Poland is also discussing the issue with NATO and the United States.   Previous Patriot Missile Transfer Poland confirmed in July that it had transferred five PAC-3 missiles for Patriot systems to Ukraine several months earlier. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the transfer was made at the request of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and U.S. Supreme Allied Commander Europe Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, following consultations among countries operating Patriot systems. Polish officials said the transfer was marginal and did not affect Poland’s air defense capabilities. Warsaw also received assurances that significantly more missiles and systems could be provided within 24 hours if Poland itself faced a threat.   Russian Kh-101 Incident The new transfer discussion follows the July 29-30 Russian attack on Ukraine, when a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile entered Polish airspace and crashed near Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin Voivodeship, about 90-95 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The missile crashed in an uninhabited area, leaving a crater about 10 meters wide. There were no casualties or significant damage to buildings. Polish forces detected the object at about 3:40 a.m. and scrambled an F-16 to identify and intercept it. The object later disappeared from radar, while a Mi-24 helicopter located the crash site. Poland tracked multiple aerial targets during the attack. One came within about five kilometers of the Polish border before turning back. Investigators later confirmed that the missile was a Russian Kh-101 manufactured in the second quarter of 2026 at a facility in the Moscow region. Poland subsequently summoned the Russian ambassador and delivered a protest note.   Earlier Russian Drone Incursion The incident followed a September 2025 violation in which between 19 and 23 Russian drones entered Polish airspace during a large-scale attack on Ukraine. Polish and NATO aircraft, including Polish F-16s and Dutch F-35s, responded, and some drones were shot down. Poland temporarily closed airspace around several airports, including Warsaw’s main international airports, and invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty for consultations among allies. Poland currently operates two Patriot batteries and is awaiting additional systems. Warsaw has also provided substantial military assistance to Ukraine since 2022. No final decision on the new Patriot missile transfer has been announced, but Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said the decision is expected within days.

WARSAW — Poland has warned SpaceX that it could reconsider its annual payments for Starlink services supporting Ukraine after Polish customers were excluded from Starlink’s European roaming region. Polish Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski addressed SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on X, saying Poland might reconsider paying about $50 million a year for Starlink services if Polish users continue to face different roaming conditions from customers in other European countries. The dispute follows changes to Starlink’s roaming rules. Starlink’s current guidance lists more than 30 European countries in a common roaming region, while stating that Poland is not included. Accounts registered in Poland are treated as intended for use in Poland.   Polish Users Face Different Roaming Conditions Under the updated rules, Polish Starlink customers traveling outside the country face additional requirements and may need to use a more expensive plan for extended international use. The changes were introduced for new customers in July, while existing customers are scheduled to be affected from August 17, 2026. Starlink has separately announced that its Global Roam plan is being discontinued for existing customers from August 17, with customers advised to move to another international plan. Polish officials have sought an explanation from SpaceX and questioned why Poland has been excluded from the European roaming region while other European countries remain included. Deputy Prime Minister and Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski said Poland expected equal treatment for Polish customers and asked SpaceX to identify any specific regulatory reasons behind the decision.   Dispute Linked to Starlink Support for Ukraine The roaming dispute has also brought Poland's financial support for Starlink services in Ukraine back into focus. Poland has funded Starlink terminals and subscriptions for Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion. Polish officials have previously said that the Polish Ministry of Digital Affairs pays about $50 million annually for Starlink services used in Ukraine. Sikorski has previously warned that Poland could look for alternative suppliers if SpaceX proved to be an unreliable provider. The issue has been part of a wider public dispute between Sikorski and Musk over Starlink's role in Ukraine and the costs paid by Poland. The two have exchanged public criticism over Starlink on several occasions. In earlier discussions, Sikorski pointed out that Poland finances the Starlink service used by Ukraine, while Musk disputed the significance of Poland's contribution.   SpaceX Has Not Given a Public Explanation As of August 12, SpaceX had not publicly provided a detailed explanation for why Poland was excluded from the European roaming region. The Starlink guidance confirms the exclusion, but does not provide a reason for Poland's separate treatment. The change has therefore prompted questions from Polish officials and users about the basis for the policy. STOCKHOLM — Sweden’s Security Service (Säpo) has disrupted a Russian intelligence operation aimed at influencing Swedish decision-making and discrediting Sweden, NATO and the European Union. According to Säpo, the operation was directed by Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR). Two Russian intelligence officers operating under diplomatic cover recruited an employee of another foreign diplomatic mission in Stockholm to act as an agent. The recruited agent was tasked with obtaining information concerning Swedish political decision-making and the country’s relations with other states. Säpo said the information was intended to support Russian influence activities involving polarising issues and undermine decision-making in Sweden. Säpo’s deputy head of operations, Christoffer Wedelin, said the service had monitored the operation over an extended period. Investigators documented meetings between the agent and the two Russian officers at different locations around Stockholm, including restaurants and during outdoor meetings. Information was exchanged during the meetings, and gifts were also handed to the agent. Säpo said it had detailed knowledge of the assignments given to the agent and intervened to stop further intelligence collection. The agency assessed that the Russian operation had been prevented from achieving its objectives. All three individuals had diplomatic immunity and therefore could not be arrested or prosecuted in Sweden. Säpo said the two Russian officers and the recruited agent have since left the country. Säpo said it publicly disclosed the case to increase awareness of the threat posed by Russian intelligence activities. Sweden’s security service has previously identified Russian intelligence gathering, including activities conducted through diplomatic missions, as a continuing security concern.

Sigonella, Italy — NATO’s RQ-4D Phoenix remotely piloted aircraft provided persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) coverage across the High North and North Atlantic during Neptune Strike 26-3, supporting Allied maritime, air and joint forces during the multinational activity. The NATO Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Force (NISRF) operated the Phoenix from its main operating base at Sigonella, Italy, throughout the exercise, which ran from July 17 to July 23, 2026. NISRF said the aircraft supported NATO’s Find-Fix-Track process and supplied intelligence products for operational planning, situational awareness and decision-making.   RQ-4D Phoenix supports NATO operations The persistent ISR coverage helped contribute to NATO’s shared operational picture as Allied forces conducted operations across the High North and North Atlantic. According to NISRF, the information collected by the aircraft supported commanders coordinating maritime, air and joint forces during the enhanced vigilance activity. The RQ-4D Phoenix is NATO’s high-altitude, long-endurance remotely piloted ISR aircraft. NISRF operates a fleet of five NATO-owned RQ-4D Phoenix aircraft, all based at Sigonella. The aircraft are derived from the RQ-4 Global Hawk design and were developed specifically to meet NATO requirements. The aircraft are equipped with Multi-Platform Radar Technology Insertion Program (MP-RTIP) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors, together with long-range wideband data links. NATO says the SAR capability allows the aircraft to conduct surveillance independently of weather conditions, during both day and night. The Phoenix has a maximum operating altitude of 60,000 feet, according to NATO specifications. Its radar and communications systems allow collected information to be processed and shared as part of NATO’s wider ISR architecture.   Neptune Strike expands into the High North Neptune Strike 26-3 was led by Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO) and focused on the High North and North Atlantic. The activity brought together Allied maritime, air and joint capabilities to strengthen interoperability, readiness and multi-domain coordination. The 2026 iteration was significant because the Neptune Strike series expanded into the High North and North Atlantic under NATO’s Arctic Sentry framework. NATO launched Arctic Sentry in February 2026 as a multi-domain military activity intended to strengthen the Alliance’s posture in the Arctic and High North. It brings together Allied exercises, forces and capabilities under a broader operational approach. Participating nations in Neptune Strike 26-3 included Croatia, Denmark, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of North Macedonia, Romania, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, alongside NISRF. Major naval elements included the UK Carrier Strike Group centred on HMS Prince of Wales and the Spanish Navy Expeditionary Strike Group. The exercise also included long-range air operations, expeditionary planning and the integration of autonomous systems.   NISRF continues to build operational readiness Brigadier General John B. Creel, Commander of NISRF, said Neptune Strike demonstrated the value of persistent multinational ISR and that each mission strengthens interoperability with Allied forces while supporting commanders with timely intelligence. NISRF said its continued participation in NATO exercises and enhanced vigilance activities such as Arctic Sentry is building operational experience, readiness and interoperability. These activities also support the force’s progress toward Full Operational Capability. The RQ-4D Phoenix is a core part of NISRF’s ISR mission. NATO describes NISRF as a collectively owned and operated capability that provides persistent, long-range surveillance on land and at sea and supplies intelligence products to NATO decision-makers and Allied forces. The deployment during Neptune Strike 26-3 therefore provided NATO with continued airborne ISR coverage while Allied maritime, air and joint forces operated across the High North and North Atlantic.

PARIS — Safran delivered 33 M88 fighter engines during the first half of 2026, more than three times the number delivered in the same period last year, as production of the Dassault Rafale continues to increase. The M88 engine powers the Rafale fighter and is produced by Safran. The increase in deliveries was identified by Safran as one of the factors behind higher military-engine revenue during the first half of the year. Safran reported that M88 deliveries reached 33 units in the first six months of 2026, compared with 10 during the first half of 2025. The company said the increase was linked to the planned increase in Rafale production.   Rafale production drives higher M88 deliveries Safran Chief Financial Officer Pascal Bantegnie said during the company's first-half results discussion that Rafale production is being increased from two aircraft per month in 2025 toward four aircraft per month by 2029. The higher aircraft production rate is resulting in a corresponding increase in M88 engine deliveries. The increase in M88 deliveries also contributed to stronger military-engine revenue within Safran's propulsion business. Safran said military-engine revenue increased year over year, driven by M88 deliveries, a favorable customer mix and a strong level of aftermarket activity. Missile propulsion revenue also benefited from increased deliveries. Safran's propulsion division reported €9.2 billion in revenue during the first half of 2026, representing 27.7 percent organic growth compared with the same period of 2025. Recurring operating income for the division reached about €2.25 billion, while its recurring operating margin reached 24.5 percent. Bantegnie said the company had benefited from strong performance in military engines, particularly the M88 programme.   Safran reports strong first-half results The M88 increase came as part of a broader improvement in Safran's financial performance. Safran reported adjusted first-half revenue of €17.571 billion, up 19 percent from the first half of 2025. Adjusted recurring operating income reached €3.237 billion, while free cash flow stood at €2.616 billion. The company's civil-engine business also recorded strong growth. Safran delivered 1,030 LEAP engines during the first six months of 2026, an increase of 41 percent compared with the first half of 2025. Based on its first-half performance, Safran raised its full-year 2026 outlook. The company now expects revenue growth in the mid-teens, recurring operating income of €6.4 billion to €6.5 billion and free cash flow of €4.7 billion to €4.9 billion.   Possible additional upside from India's 114-Rafale programme Safran also has a potential additional source of business connected with India's planned acquisition of 114 Rafale fighters for the Indian Air Force. India has moved forward with the proposed government-to-government procurement programme and has issued a Letter of Request to France. French and Indian sides are continuing the process before any final contract is signed. Recent reports said France was expected to respond to India's request by mid-August 2026. Safran management said any advance payments received before the end of 2026 in connection with the discussions for the 114 Rafales have not been included in its current financial guidance. Bantegnie said that such payments, if received before the end of the year, would therefore represent an additional upside to the company's existing outlook. Safran did not provide an amount for any potential advance payment or indicate that a final contract had already been concluded. The proposed Indian programme is separate from Rafale aircraft already under contract. India's existing Rafale fleet includes aircraft acquired for the Indian Air Force, while the country has also placed an order for Rafale Marine aircraft for the Indian Navy.   Production requirements could increase if India signs the contract A final agreement for 114 additional Rafale fighters would create a substantial additional requirement for aircraft production and, consequently, for M88 engines. However, the Indian programme remains subject to the ongoing government-to-government procurement process and negotiations. The potential financial impact on Safran should therefore be distinguished from the company's confirmed 2026 results and current guidance. For now, Safran's first-half figures show that M88 production has already increased significantly. The company delivered 33 M88 engines in the first six months of 2026, compared with 10 in the same period last year, while the planned increase in Rafale production is expected to support further engine deliveries in the coming years.

London, August 10, 2026 — Cameras fitted to K3 Scout uncrewed surface vessels operated by the Royal Marines were found transmitting routine “heartbeat communications” to an IP address in China, prompting the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to remove internet connectivity from the affected equipment. The issue was identified during a routine cyber vulnerability assessment. The MoD said its investigation found no evidence that Ministry of Defence data or systems had been accessed, compromised or transmitted externally. The discovery was reported by The Telegraph on August 9, 2026, and has raised concerns about the security of third-party components used in British military equipment.   Chinese IP Address Detected The cameras installed on the K3 Scout vessels were found to be sending periodic “heartbeat” communications to an IP address located in China. These communications are routine status signals used by devices to indicate that they are online and functioning. The MoD has not said that classified information was transmitted. After identifying the connection, the department removed internet connectivity from the affected cameras. Reports have also raised concerns about the use of the vessels near sensitive activities involving Royal Marines and Special Boat Service personnel in Poole, Dorset. Questions were also raised over whether the cameras could remain active when the vessels were powered down. However, the MoD investigation found no evidence that its data or systems had been compromised.   K3 Scout Fleet The vessels are K3 Scout uncrewed surface vessels supplied by Hampshire-based Kraken Technology Group. The Royal Navy acquired about 20 vessels under a package worth approximately £12 million to £12.3 million. The fleet has been operated by the Coastal Forces Squadron and 47 Commando Royal Marines since March 2026 under Project Beehive. Project Beehive is intended to develop the integration of uncrewed systems with traditional warships and support capabilities including surveillance and force protection. The K3 Scout is 8.4 metres long, has a maximum speed of 55 knots, a range of about 650 nautical miles at 25 knots, endurance of up to 30 days depending on the mission, and a payload capacity of around 600 kg. The vessel can be configured for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, logistics and other missions.   Third-Party Camera Components Kraken Technology Group sourced the cameras from a third-party supplier. The company said it had received assurances that the equipment met the required security standards and was compliant with the US National Defense Authorization Act. Kraken acknowledged that some of the cameras contained a small number of components originating outside the UK. A company spokesman said: “We are aware that some third-party, NDAA-compliant cameras had a small number of components originating from outside the UK. After a full audit by both Kraken and the Royal Navy we are confident no sensitive information has ever been shared outside of intended channels and any potential vulnerabilities have been identified and closed.” The company and Royal Navy subsequently carried out an audit of the equipment.   MoD Investigation An MoD spokesman said: “A routine cyber vulnerability assessment identified an issue affecting a Kraken Unmanned Surface Vessel sub-system used by the Royal Navy.” The department said its investigation found no evidence of MoD data or systems being accessed, compromised or transmitted externally. The MoD added that its assurance and testing procedures are designed to identify and address potential vulnerabilities and that routine security checks continue across its systems and equipment.   Potential Strait of Hormuz Deployment The K3 Scout fleet has also been linked to preparations for a possible UK contribution to securing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. A defence source familiar with the matter told The Telegraph that the vessels formed part of preparations connected with a potential deployment to the region. The source criticised the failure to identify the origins of the components earlier and said confidence in the platform had been affected. The K3 Scout has previously been tested for operations involving uncrewed maritime systems, including NATO activities in the Baltic Sea.   International Interest The K3 Scout has attracted interest from international military organisations. Kraken has reported a $49 million agreement with US Special Operations Command for the vessels. The platform has also taken part in NATO Task Force-X activities in the Baltic and has been involved in Royal Navy trials under Project Beehive. The security issue comes as the UK and other military organisations continue developing uncrewed surface vessels for a wider range of naval missions.   Political Response The discovery has prompted calls for greater scrutiny of defence supply chains. Conservative shadow security minister Alicia Kearns called for an urgent audit of military equipment to identify Chinese components and assess potential security vulnerabilities. The incident highlights the difficulty of securing complex defence supply chains when military platforms contain hardware obtained from multiple suppliers. The confirmed finding is that the K3 Scout cameras transmitted routine heartbeat communications to an IP address in China. The MoD has stated that there is no evidence that its data or systems were accessed, compromised or transmitted externally, and the affected cameras have had their internet connectivity removed.

BERLIN — Boeing and Rheinmetall are offering the MQ-28 Ghost Bat as a mature platform for Germany’s planned Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) capability, with the companies targeting a 2029 deployment for the German Air Force. The proposal would use the existing, flight-tested MQ-28 instead of developing a completely new aircraft. German sensors, weapons and mission software would be integrated into the platform, with Rheinmetall serving as the lead system integrator in Germany.   German-Controlled Integration Rheinmetall plans to establish independent system integration for the MQ-28 in Germany. Under the proposed model, software development, mission integration and intellectual property would remain under German control. “Germany does not have to choose between speed and independence. We offer a way to achieve both at the same time,” said Mike Schmidt, CEO of Rheinmetall’s Air, Uncrewed and Space business unit. “The MQ-28 enables us to bypass the lengthy development phase of a new aircraft and go directly to the decisive task: making the capabilities of unmanned combat air systems available to the German Air Force,” Schmidt added. Boeing and Rheinmetall have also established a German industrial network involving Rohde & Schwarz, Diehl Defence and HENSOLDT to support the development and integration of national technologies.   MQ-28 Flight-Test Experience The MQ-28 Ghost Bat was originally developed and manufactured in Australia for the Royal Australian Air Force. The aircraft has completed more than 150 test flights and has participated in multinational military exercises, including the US-led Valiant Shield. Boeing Defense Australia’s Global Director for the MQ-28 program, Glen Ferguson, said the aircraft has already passed development stages that other CCA programs are still working through. “While many CCA programs worldwide are still in the concept, definition or early test phase, the MQ-28A Ghost Bat has already gone through these essential development steps,” Ferguson said. The MQ-28 is being developed for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, with Boeing continuing development of its air-to-ground capabilities.   Modular Design and Digital Development Boeing says the MQ-28 has a modular architecture designed to support continued adaptation to changing mission requirements. Ferguson said the aircraft can be adapted for new missions, including air-to-ground operations, without treating each change as a basic retrofit. The program is also supported by a digital twin of the aircraft, which provides an environment for engineers to simulate and test system changes. For Germany, the MQ-28 could also serve as a development and test platform for tactics, training and force-structure planning involving crewed and uncrewed aircraft. “If the goal is to achieve such a capability by 2029, this work must begin today with the development of tactics, training, definition of force structure and the integration of sovereign technologies,” Ferguson said. The experience gained from integrating German technologies onto the MQ-28 could also support Germany's future participation in European uncrewed combat aircraft programs. The Boeing-Rheinmetall proposal therefore combines an existing flight-tested platform with German-led technology integration, with the stated objective of helping Germany establish a CCA capability by 2029.

LONDON, UK — The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has opened market engagement for a new Jet Training System to replace the ageing Hawk aircraft used by the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows and support future fast-jet pilot training. The programme, listed under project code 700004994-RFI, is part of the UK government’s Defence Investment Plan 2026, which commits £360 million to the full recapitalisation of the Jet Training System. The investment includes new aircraft for the Red Arrows and is intended to provide a modernised training capability for UK and international fast-jet training requirements. The MoD says the new system will also support the transition towards fifth- and sixth-generation air systems and will include a significant UK workshare.   Hawk T1 replacement The Hawk T1 entered Royal Air Force service in 1976 and has been flown by the Red Arrows since 1979, when the team moved from the Folland Gnat. The aircraft is now approaching the end of its service life, with the Hawk T1 scheduled to leave UK service in 2030. It is no longer used for the RAF's main advanced fast-jet training role, although the Red Arrows and a small number of other operators have continued to fly the type. The new programme will provide a replacement aircraft for the Red Arrows while also addressing the wider requirement for a modern fast-jet training system.   Current fast-jet training Advanced fast-jet training for RAF and Royal Navy pilots is currently conducted using the Hawk T2 at RAF Valley in Wales under the UK Military Flying Training System. The Hawk T2 has experienced availability problems in the past, which have affected the military flying-training pipeline. The National Audit Office and parliamentary committees have previously examined problems affecting the UK's military flying-training system. The MoD is now developing the replacement requirement as part of its wider effort to modernise military pilot training.   International competition The UK no longer has an active Hawk production line. BAE Systems closed the Hawk production line in 2020 after completing its final export orders. Potential aircraft available on the international market include the Boeing-Saab T-7A Red Hawk, Leonardo M-346 and Korea Aerospace Industries T-50 family. These aircraft are among the established jet-training platforms that could potentially meet elements of the UK's future requirement. BAE Systems has partnered with Boeing and Saab to promote the T-7 for the UK requirement. Leonardo has also been associated with the competition. The British company Aeralis, which was developing a modular jet trainer concept, had also been pursuing the requirement. The company entered administration in May 2026 following funding difficulties. The MoD's requirement for significant UK workshare means industrial participation will be an important part of any future procurement.   Link to future combat aircraft The replacement training system is being developed as the RAF prepares for future generations of combat aircraft. The UK is continuing to expand its F-35 capability and is working with Italy and Japan through the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), which is intended to deliver a next-generation combat aircraft from 2035. The Defence Investment Plan also includes funding for Collaborative Combat Aircraft that will operate alongside crewed combat aircraft. A modern training system will therefore need to prepare pilots for increasingly advanced aircraft and operating concepts.   Procurement process The current Request for Information is an early market-engagement exercise. It is being used by the MoD to gather information from potential suppliers before the detailed requirement, delivery approach and procurement strategy are finalised. Interested companies have been asked to provide their details, a point of contact and their areas of interest to the programme team. The deadline for submissions is 11 September 2026. The MoD has made clear that the exercise is for information gathering only. It is not an invitation to tender and does not represent a commitment to procure a particular aircraft. HELSINKI — Finland will not transfer additional air-defense interceptor missiles to Ukraine if doing so would weaken its own military readiness, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said. In an interview with Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat published around August 8, Häkkänen said Finland had already provided substantial military assistance to Ukraine but could not risk its own air-defense capabilities. “We have done significantly more than could be expected from a country of our size, but as a frontline country, we cannot jeopardize our own air defense readiness,” Häkkänen said. Finland does not operate the Patriot air-defense system and does not possess Patriot interceptor missiles. Häkkänen said Finland has certain air-defense missile capabilities but did not disclose further details. The decision comes as Ukraine continues to seek additional Patriot interceptors from countries operating the U.S.-made system.   Finland's Continued Support for Ukraine Finland has continued to provide military assistance while taking the resource requirements of its own armed forces into account. In May 2026, Finland announced its 33rd defense materiel assistance package for Ukraine, worth about €128 million. The Finnish government said the total value of defense materiel delivered to Ukraine had reached approximately €3.4 billion. He said Russia is expected to continue targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure, increasing the importance of air-defense systems for protecting critical energy facilities. The Finnish minister said expanding U.S. defense production would be important for addressing the interceptor shortage. He also criticized bureaucratic delays and called for faster decisions to increase military production. Finland's decision does not end its military support for Ukraine. Helsinki continues to provide defense materiel and financial assistance through initiatives such as PURL. In June 2026, Finland and Ukraine also signed a memorandum covering quality-assurance cooperation in defense-industry production. OXFORDSHIRE, UK — British engineering company MGI Engineering is preparing to make its TigerShark autonomous one-way strike system available from October 2026, following flight testing under the UK Ministry of Defence’s Project Brakestop. Based in Witney, Oxfordshire, MGI Engineering was founded by Mike Gascoyne, who has held senior technical positions with Formula 1 teams including McLaren, Renault and Toyota. The company developed TigerShark as a high-speed, long-range one-way effector for deep-strike missions. A one-way effector is designed to reach its target and deliver its payload without being recovered. MGI positions TigerShark as a lower-cost alternative to traditional long-range strike weapons, including systems such as Storm Shadow and Tomahawk.   TigerShark specifications MGI states that TigerShark has a maximum speed of 750 km/h (466 mph) and a cruise speed of about 650 km/h. Its stated range is 900 km (559 miles) with a full payload, while the company has also reported flight testing at ranges exceeding 1,000 km under certain conditions. The system has a 300 kg modular payload bay, which can be configured for high-explosive or electronic-warfare payloads. Its empty mass is 170 kg, while its maximum take-off weight is 800 kg. TigerShark uses composite construction and includes a 3D-printed nose section containing the avionics bay. Propulsion is provided by two Argive A1100 turbojet engines. The system is launched from a land-based vehicle using rocket-assisted take-off, after which the turbojets provide sustained flight. The launcher is designed to support coordinated launches of multiple systems. MGI has stated a unit cost of approximately $549,000. Under Project Brakestop, the UK Ministry of Defence has set a target cost of around £400,000 excluding the warhead for systems developed under the programme.   Autonomous operation in GPS-denied environments TigerShark is designed to operate without relying on GPS or GNSS signals. Its navigation system combines inertial navigation with GPS-free terrain mapping. The inertial navigation system tracks the aircraft's movement from a known starting point, while terrain mapping uses onboard sensor information and pre-loaded maps to help correct its position during flight. The autonomy system was developed with Auterion, which provides its open software-defined autonomy architecture, including the Skynode system. The open architecture is intended to allow third-party payloads, sensors and software upgrades to be integrated without requiring a complete redesign of the platform.   Development and Project Brakestop MGI first publicly displayed TigerShark at the DSEI defence exhibition in London in September 2025. The system completed its first flight tests in April 2026. Auterion described the trials as the first successful European test of a system in this weight and range class in more than a decade. TigerShark is being developed under Project Brakestop, a UK Ministry of Defence programme focused on accelerating long-range autonomous strike systems. The programme requires participating systems to have a range of at least 500 km, a payload capacity of at least 225 kg, a speed above 600 km/h and production capacity of at least 20 units per month following an order. MGI received a development contract under the programme and displayed TigerShark at a Project Brakestop industry event in June 2026. The company is competing against MBDA UK's Crossbow and Rotron Aerospace's SkyLance. All three systems have completed flight trials at the UK's Hebrides Range.   Production plans MGI plans to increase TigerShark production during the fourth quarter of 2026 and into 2027. The company says the system is manufactured entirely in the United Kingdom and is cleared for export licensing to allied nations. MGI is presenting TigerShark as a British-designed and manufactured option for long-range autonomous strike missions, with an emphasis on modularity, autonomous navigation and production at a lower unit cost than traditional cruise-missile programmes. ÖRNSKÖLDSVIK, Sweden — BAE Systems is expanding production capacity at its Hägglunds facility in northern Sweden to meet rising European demand for its CV90 infantry fighting vehicles and BvS10 all-terrain vehicles. Tom Arseneault, President and CEO of BAE Systems Inc., outlined the production outlook during the company’s first-half 2026 earnings call. He said both vehicle programmes are contributing to the company’s growing order backlog in Sweden and its Platforms & Services business. “Our CV90 and BvS10 combat vehicles are in high demand across a number of European customers,” Arseneault said.   Production capacity expanding Hägglunds expects to produce almost 300 combat vehicles in 2026 and more than 400 in 2027. The planned expansion represents an increase of about 400% in production capacity compared with previous levels. BAE Systems has invested more than $300 million at the Örnsköldsvik facility over several years, with additional investment planned. The expansion includes new assembly and welding lines, increased testing and verification capacity, a logistics centre, an integration and inspection facility, and additional office space. The workforce has also expanded significantly, from about 750–800 employees several years ago to approximately 2,600.   Growing European orders The production increase is supported by orders from several European customers. Hägglunds is producing CV90 vehicles for countries including Sweden, Denmark, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, while BvS10 programmes involve Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom. BAE Systems rolled out the first Slovak CV9035 MkIV at Hägglunds in February 2026. Slovakia has ordered 152 CV90 vehicles. The company is also working with European industrial partners on production and assembly activities for its vehicle programmes.   Five-country CV90 programme The planned production figures for 2027 do not include a separate multinational CV90 procurement programme that remains under negotiation. The current initiative involves Sweden, Finland, Norway, Lithuania and the Netherlands. Estonia was previously part of the six-country technical agreement but withdrew from the planned new CV90 procurement in April 2026. The programme is based on the CV90 MkIV and could involve more than 400 additional vehicles. BAE Systems submitted its best and final offer in June 2026, with contract negotiations continuing and contract completion expected during 2026. Deliveries are planned to begin in 2028, subject to the procurement being finalised. BAE Systems Hägglunds has already carried out preparatory work to support production if the order is confirmed.   Contribution to BAE Systems' European business Hägglunds and Bofors are also contributing to stronger results in BAE Systems’ Platforms & Services business. Chief Financial Officer Brad Greve said Platforms & Services sales increased 12% in the first half of 2026, while sales from Hägglunds and Bofors increased by nearly 30%, driven by European demand. BAE Systems Chief Executive Charles Woodburn has identified Hägglunds, Bofors, MBDA and Eurofighter among the businesses supporting the company’s growth in Europe. The combination of increased production, existing CV90 and BvS10 programmes and the potential five-country CV90 order gives Hägglunds further production opportunities. Arseneault described the Swedish business as having “some really good, strong growth potential” beyond its current performance.

GIJÓN, Spain — General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) and Santa Bárbara Sistemas have unveiled the ASCOD 42 demonstrator fitted with Valhalla Turrets’ MANGART 30 remote-controlled turret at the FIDMA 2026 international trade fair in Gijón, Spain. The vehicle was displayed in cooperation with the Asturias Military Museum. The configuration combines the tracked ASCOD infantry fighting vehicle platform with a 30 mm turret designed for multiple missions, including counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) operations.   MANGART 30 turret The MANGART 30 is a remotely operated turret that allows the crew to control the weapon system from inside the protected hull. The turret is armed with a Northrop Grumman MK44S Bushmaster 30 mm automatic cannon capable of firing standard 30×173 mm ammunition and air-burst rounds. It also carries a coaxial FN MAG 7.62 mm machine gun. Valhalla Turrets has designed the system with an open architecture, allowing different sensors, effectors and mission equipment to be integrated according to operational requirements. The turret incorporates a computer-based fire-control system, automatic target tracking, day and thermal imaging sensors and a laser rangefinder. Its elevation range extends from -10 to +70 degrees, while the turret provides 360-degree traverse. The combination of automatic tracking, electro-optical sensors and air-burst ammunition gives the MANGART 30 capabilities relevant to engaging a range of ground and aerial targets, including unmanned aircraft.   ASCOD 42 configuration The ASCOD 42 belongs to GDELS' ASCOD family of tracked armored vehicles. The platform has been supplied in different configurations to several armed forces. Spain operates the ASCOD-based Pizarro infantry fighting vehicle, while the United Kingdom uses a heavily modified ASCOD variant for its Ajax reconnaissance vehicle programme. The demonstrator displayed at FIDMA uses composite rubber tracks instead of conventional steel tracks. The lighter track solution is intended to reduce noise, vibration and wear on paved surfaces while maintaining traction for off-road operations.   Safran PASEO Master sight The ASCOD 42 is also equipped with Safran's PASEO Master commander’s sight. The panoramic sight provides the commander with an independent observation capability and a 360-degree view around the vehicle. The PASEO family is used on armored vehicles for day-and-night observation and targeting. Safran has stated that more than 2,500 systems from the family have been sold worldwide. The independent commander’s sight allows the commander to search for and identify targets separately from the gunner's line of sight.   Valhalla's counter-drone focus Valhalla Turrets, founded in 2019 and based in Komenda, Slovenia, develops remotely controlled weapon systems with a particular focus on air-defense and counter-drone applications. The company previously developed the MANGART 25, a smaller turret that combines a 25 mm automatic cannon with radar and electro-optical/infrared sensors. The MANGART 30 represents a larger turret configuration intended for integration on both wheeled and tracked armored vehicles. Valhalla has emphasized the importance of an open architecture for adapting the turret to changing battlefield requirements, including C-UAS missions. The company has also demonstrated the MANGART family on wheeled platforms. Earlier in 2026, the MANGART 25 was tested on a Pandur 6×6 vehicle during live-fire activities in Slovenia involving Valhalla, GDELS-Steyr and the Slovenian Armed Forces.   Relevance to future vehicle requirements The ASCOD 42 demonstration brings together GDELS' tracked vehicle platform and a Slovenian-developed remote-controlled turret in a single configuration. It gives potential customers an option combining a tracked armored vehicle, a 30 mm automatic cannon, independent panoramic observation and capabilities aimed at modern aerial and ground threats. The display does not confirm a Slovenian procurement decision for the ASCOD 42. No official contract for such a purchase has been announced in the information provided.
