Defense News ,China :- A group of Chinese scientists has recently completed a study revealing the potential effectiveness of high-speed kinetic energy weapons against advanced armored vehicles, including the formidable US-operated M1 Abrams tank. Led by Huang Jie at the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center, the researchers conducted simulations to assess the impact of kinetic weapons on heavily-armored tanks.Their findings suggest that a single shot from a high-speed kinetic energy weapon could incapacitate heavily-armored tanks, such as those weighing 40 to 60 tons, without leaving visible external damage. The study demonstrated that a solid sphere weighing 20 kilograms and traveling at speeds exceeding Mach 4 could generate a substantial 25 megajoules or seven kilowatt-hours of kinetic energy, capable of causing severe internal damage while preserving the tank exterior. The potential threat extends even to grazing hits, as the high terminal speed of the projectile could induce significant damage. Striking the front of a tank, the projectile might disrupt connections between the fire control computer and turret, compromising the vehicle firepower and overall lethality. The report highlighted the weapon ability to concentrate stress on crucial internal components, affecting the tank gun stabilizer console and wiring. The research team warned of the high likelihood of failure due to overload damage in these specific areas.Additionally, a related simulation conducted by Dalian University of Technology suggested that the crew of an M1 Abrams tank could face fatal injuries if hit by a high-speed kinetic projectile. These revelations underscore the potential vulnerability of heavily-armored vehicles to advanced kinetic energy weaponry, raising concerns about the evolving landscape of military technology.

Space News ,India :- On Monday, India achieved a significant milestone by successfully launching the X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat), the world second space-based observatory dedicated to exploring poorly observed celestial phenomena. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) employed its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle to deploy XPoSat into a 650km orbit around Earth. The primary focus of XPoSat is to investigate some of the most violent and enigmatic objects in the cosmos, such as the remnants of dead stars known as black holes and neutron stars. Unlike traditional observations that rely on brightness, timing, and wavelength, XPoSat utilizes polarisation as a distinctive feature to study X-ray emissions from celestial sources. Many astronomers consider this approach a "fourth window" for observations, providing access to information otherwise inaccessible.Varun Bhalerao, an associate professor of physics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, expressed optimism about the mission, stating, "We are hoping to use XPoSat to gain new insights into the mechanisms fueling the emissions from some of the most extreme objects in the universe." XPoSat is designed to operate for five years.Neutron stars and black holes, characterized by their high densities, powerful magnetic fields, and intense gravity, are compact remnants of stars that have depleted their fuel. As material falls into these objects due to gravitational forces, it emits radiation, including X-rays detectable by space-based observatories. The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) in December 2021, marking the first observatory with similar astronomical objectives. XPoSat features two instruments, namely POLIX, developed at the Raman Research Institute in Bangalore, and XSPECT, developed by the space astronomy group at ISRO UR Rao Space Centre, Bangalore.Tarun Souradeep, director of the Raman Research Institute, highlighted the institute contribution, stating that they designed and fabricated the flight model of POLIX, showcasing capabilities in both science and engineering. XPoSat and IXPE possess complementary observational capabilities, collectively probing different emission mechanisms and the physics of bright X-ray sources in the universe.

Defense News ,U.S Red Sea :-  In a recent maritime clash, U.S. helicopters successfully thwarted an attack by Houthi militants backed by Iran on the Maersk container vessel in the Red Sea. Reports from American, Maersk, and Houthi officials indicate that three ships were sunk, and 10 militants lost their lives during the confrontation on Sunday. The incident unfolded around 0330 GMT as Houthi militants attempted to board the Singapore-flagged Maersk Hangzhou. Responding to a distress call, helicopters from the USS Eisenhower and USS Gravely, along with the ship security team, repelled the attackers, as confirmed by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).As a precautionary measure, Maersk announced a temporary suspension of all sailings through the Red Sea for the next 48 hours in the aftermath of the attack.According to a Houthi spokesman, the group launched the assault after the ship crew ignored warning calls. He reported that 10 Houthi naval personnel were either "dead or missing" following the U.S. forces counterattack in the Red Sea.This naval skirmish highlights the potential for regional escalation, especially as Israel continues its bombing campaign in response to a surprise cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7. The ongoing conflict has led to a significant toll on lives and has created a ripple effect in the region.Since November, Yemen Houthi rebels have targeted vessels in the Red Sea to express solidarity with Hamas. This has compelled major shipping companies to opt for the longer and more expensive route around Africa Cape of Good Hope instead of navigating through the Suez Canal. In response to the escalating tensions, the United States initiated Operation Prosperity Guardian on December 19, with more than 20 countries joining efforts to safeguard ships in the Red Sea near Yemen.Despite Maersk decision to resume sailing through the Red Sea on December 24, attacks have persisted, and several U.S. allies have been hesitant to publicly declare their commitment to the coalition. The attempted Houthi boarding of the Maersk Hangzhou marked the second attack on the vessel in as many days. On the previous day, the ship, carrying 14,000 containers from Singapore, was struck by a missile southwest of Al Hodeidah, Yemen. Defense news ,India & Russia :- India and Russia have jointly agreed to enhance their cooperation in the realm of civilian nuclear initiatives, with Moscow expressing its willingness to share technology related to small modular reactors utilized in power generation. This collaboration unfolds as both nations actively pursue the completion of Phase 1 of the monumental 6,000MW Kudankulam nuclear power project situated in Tamil Nadu. The small modular reactors, characterized by their advanced nuclear technology, boast a power generation capacity ranging from 75MW to 300MW.The culmination of India External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar five-day visit to Russia marks a pivotal moment in this strategic partnership. According to informed sources, the focus of their discussions centered on the commissioning of Reactors 3 and 4, along with expediting the progress on Reactors 5 and 6 at the Kudankulam nuclear project. Notably, this collaborative effort gains significance against the backdrop of the stalling of the US Westinghouse-supported 6,600MW Kovvada nuclear project and the French Areva-supported 9,900 MW Jaitapur nuclear project due to protracted price negotiations. Currently, only Reactors 1 and 2 of Kudankulam are operational, providing a substantial 2,000MW of electricity to India.During Jaishankar visit, notable engagements included meetings with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. A particularly noteworthy occurrence was Jaishankar unexpected interaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin on December 27. It is understood that Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed regret to Putin for missing the annual summit in Moscow, attributing it to his commitments to the G20 summit. However, he provided assurance that the 2024 summit would proceed as planned. The timing of Jaishankar visit is significant as Russia assumes the presidency of the BRICS platform. Both nations are actively exploring future collaborations in military systems akin to the successful Brahmos missile and AK-203 rifle projects under the "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) initiative. Among the potential joint ventures is the manufacturing of Kamov 226 T multi-purpose helicopters.Despite the geopolitical complexities, India has successfully maintained its strategic autonomy under Modi, fostering close ties with Moscow. Russia currently supplies nearly 65% of Indian military hardware. Challenges persist, however, as delays in spare parts supplies are experienced due to Russia conflict with Ukraine. Notably, India anticipates the arrival of an Akula-class nuclear-powered attack submarine from Moscow on a long-term lease in 2025.Against the backdrop of security concerns in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea, India is engaged in discussions with Russia to explore the northern sea route in contingency scenarios.
