Space News ,NASA :- After months of eager anticipation, NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission has reached a momentous milestone by successfully unlocking the cache of asteroid material collected during its billion-mile journey. A recent NASA statement reveals that on January 10, a team of technicians triumphantly removed two stubborn fasteners, granting scientists unprecedented access to the precious cargo. The historic OSIRIS-REx spacecraft made headlines in September 2023 as the first U.S. mission to bring back an asteroid sample to Earth. Stored securely within a return capsule, the tantalizing treasure was just out of reach due to two stuck fasteners that resisted the team's initial attempts with limited tools. While a portion of the asteroid material, amounting to 70.3 grams (2.48 ounces), had been accessed from the outside of the sampler head known as the Touch-and-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM), the majority remained confined within the capsule.According to NASA's recent statement, the breakthrough came as two of the 35 fasteners on TAGSAM, resistant to the approved tools inside the OSIRIS-REx sample container, were successfully released. With these fasteners now removed, the astromaterials curation team at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston will proceed with disassembling the TAGSAM head to retrieve the remaining asteroid material, consisting of dust and rocks up to approximately 0.4 inches (one cm) in size. The final mass of the sample will be determined in the coming weeks.NASA plans to unveil a catalog of all Bennu samples later this year, enabling global scientists and institutions to submit requests for research or display. This development opens new avenues for scientific exploration, as Asteroid Bennu, believed to be a primitive space rock dating back to the early days of the solar system, could offer invaluable insights into the formation and evolution of celestial bodies. As the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft transitions to a new phase, now named OSIRIS-APEX, it embarks on a five-year journey to study the asteroid Apophis—named after the ancient Egyptian god of chaos—as it approaches our planet. This shift in focus marks a continuation of NASA's commitment to unraveling the mysteries of our cosmic neighborhood.

The successful launch of the 'Suraya' spy satellite on January 20 has raised concerns about Iran's potential to develop ICBMs capable of reaching the United States, carrying warheads weighing hundreds of kilograms. The satellite, weighing approximately 50 kg, was placed into a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) with a perigee of 750 km and an inclination of 64.51°. Inbar's analysis focuses on the launcher's rear-stabilized small fins, which enhance static stability during the first stage boost and potentially contribute to roll control.Based on available open-source information, Inbar suggests that the three-stage QAEM-100 launcher used in the satellite launch could serve as a prototype for an Iranian ICBM. The QAEM-100 is launched from a mobile launcher known as a Transporter Erector Launcher (TEL), and its compact three-stage configuration raises concerns about its potential military applications.Inbar acknowledges that transforming the QAEM-100 into a functional ICBM would require additional modifications, including the development of an operational Reentry Vehicle (RV) and a small fourth stage for precise energy maneuvering, relying on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data and/or a star tracker.Despite the absence of detailed dimensions or weight breakdown, Inbar emphasizes the significance of Iran's claim to have achieved a 750 km orbit with a 50 kg (option for 80 kg) satellite. He suggests that if this was accomplished through a direct ascent method, it could support assessments that a similar missile might carry an RV weighing about half a ton to intercontinental ranges. The analysis raises concerns about Iran's evolving capabilities in the realm of ballistic missiles and underscores the importance of closely monitoring developments in its space program. The potential advancement towards ICBM capability heightens geopolitical tensions and necessitates continued scrutiny from the international community.

Its presence has been noted in various regions of North America, including Canada and the United States, as well as in Norway and South Korea.Media reports from Wyoming reveal the disease in 800 samples of deer, elk, and moose, prompting concerns among experts about the possibility of it evolving into a slow-moving disaster with the potential to affect humans. Currently, CWD is fatal, lacking known treatments or vaccines, drawing parallels with diseases like mad cow disease or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE).Dr. Cory Anderson, speaking to The Guardian, points to the BSE outbreak in Britain as an example of how spillover events from animals to humans can lead to unforeseen consequences. While it's not asserted that CWD will definitely cross over to humans, experts emphasize the need for preparedness.According to the CDC, prion diseases have long incubation periods and affect both humans and animals. The chronic wasting disease may take over a year before symptoms manifest in an infected animal, with signs including drastic weight loss, stumbling, and other neurological symptoms. Infected animals may also exhibit listlessness, drooling, excessive thirst or urination, drooping ears, and a lack of fear of people. The World Health Organization has been advising since 1997 to prevent the agents of known prion diseases from entering the human food chain. The CDC warns of potential risks to non-human primates, like monkeys, based on animal studies suggesting transmission through contact with infected deer or elk fluids.CWD is challenging to eradicate once established in the environment, with the ability to persist for years in dirt or on surfaces. The disease is reported to be resistant to disinfectants, formaldehyde, radiation, and incineration at high temperatures.First discovered in Colorado in 1967, there have been no reports of humans being affected by zombie deer disease to date. However, studies indicate a potential risk of transmission to humans. To curb its spread, the CDC recommends refraining from shooting, handling, or consuming meat from visibly sick or odd-acting deer and elk, including those found dead. Precautions such as wearing latex or rubber gloves during dressing and minimizing handling of organs, especially brain or spinal cord tissues, are also advised.Highlighting the broader context of zoonotic diseases, the article emphasizes the significant public health risks posed by diseases transmitted from animals to humans. Examples such as Influenza, SARS, MERS, Rabies, Lyme disease, and the recent zoonotic transmission of SARS-CoV-2 underscore the importance of monitoring and understanding the interfaces between humans and animals to prevent future outbreaks and ensure global health security.

To mitigate the risk, meticulous design and mathematical considerations have emphasized distributing the soldier's weight over a large surface area to reduce the pressure per unit area, making it insufficient to trigger most mines.Despite ongoing global efforts to eliminate anti-personnel mines, their numbers persist, posing a threat to both military personnel and civilians in conflict zones. The Treaty of Ottawa, in effect for nearly three decades, has not significantly impacted the situation. In response to this persistent threat, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed the Boot Anti Mine Infantry (BAMI) for assault operations. This efficient foot protection system boasts a lower mass, providing ease of movement without causing fatigue. Crafted from chrome-tanned leather, the BAMI not only shields against extreme temperatures but also protects the wearer's foot from the debris generated by an anti-personnel mine explosion.Anti-personnel mines containing high explosive can exert a peak pressure of 45,000 kg/cm2 upon detonation. The BAMI successfully reduces this explosive overpressure to less than 100 kg/cm2, a safe pressure transmitted to the wearer's heel. Independent lab tests have confirmed the boots' ability to resist the blast of a 35-gram CE pellet, equivalent in weight to a human. The upper part of the BAMI is constructed from chrome-tanned leather, offering protection against elements and debris resulting from mine explosions. The sole features two configurations for the heel and ball sides, each incorporating deflectors made of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) to absorb and redirect blast energy. Ceramic honeycomb material further absorbs stress and minimizes the energy transmitted to the wearer's foot. The ball side of the sole combines woollen felt and ceramic honeycomb material for lighter weight and enhanced comfort. Both configurations are integrated into the flexible and wear-resistant polyurethane sole.It is essential to note that while these specialized boots strengthen protection against pressure mines, they may not safeguard against directed anti-personnel mines activated by an operator's command or a blown fuse. Nevertheless, these anti-mine shoes have proven effective in preventing serious injuries to soldiers, underscoring their utility. Looking ahead, advancements in robotic mine-clearing equipment offer promising prospects for enhanced minefield safety. For the Indian Army, these specially designed boots cater to soldiers deployed in Northern and Eastern Commands, specifically along the Line of Control (LOC) and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, as well as in Arunachal Pradesh.

The intentional power-down occurred when SLIM's battery capacity dropped to 12% on the lunar surface, preventing over-discharge and preserving the possibility of a recovery operation.Team members explained that SLIM's solar cells are currently facing west, and there is optimism that exposure to sunlight from the west could lead to power generation. The team is actively preparing for a recovery operation, emphasizing that SLIM can function solely on power generated by its solar cells.Despite the challenges, SLIM successfully transmitted technical data and images collected during its descent and landing on Friday. The team plans to provide a comprehensive status update and share data analysis results at the end of the week.SLIM, also known as the "Moon Sniper," serves as a technology demonstrator for super-precise lunar landings. Its mission includes landing within 330 feet (100 meters) of a designated spot on the rim of the moon's Shioli Crater. The probe was launched in September 2023 alongside the XRISM X-ray space telescope, which recently sent back its initial test images from low Earth orbit. While JAXA has not disclosed whether SLIM hit its landing target, the upcoming update is expected to provide more details. SLIM also carried two mini-rovers, LEV-1 ("Lunar Excursion Vehicle" 1) and LEV-2, both of which successfully deployed as planned. LEV-1 was confirmed to be operational on the lunar surface shortly after the landing.Japan's SLIM mission adds to the achievements of other nations that have soft-landed spacecraft on the moon, including the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War space race, China in 2013, and India with its Chandrayaan-3 mission in August 2023.

The signal, believed to be emitted from a potential medium-sized black hole, would mark the first-ever detection of its kind.Globular clusters, ancient star groupings scattered throughout our galaxy, are known for their densely packed stars. 47 Tucanae, boasting over a million stars within a 120-light-year diameter sphere, is observable even with the naked eye.The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) team, conducting a comprehensive 450-hour radio measurement campaign with ATCA, has produced the most detailed radio image of 47 Tucanae to date. Positioned approximately 14,500 light-years from the sun, the peculiar radio wave source was pinpointed at the cluster's center.Researchers speculate that the signal may originate from either a medium-sized black hole or a pulsar—a rapidly spinning neutron star emitting radio waves. The discovery of a medium-sized black hole would represent a scientific breakthrough, bridging the gap between stellar black holes and supermassive black holes found at galaxy centers.Intermediate-mass black holes, believed to exist in globular clusters, have eluded clear detection until now. Alessandro Paduano, lead author of the study and former Ph.D. student at Curtin University, notes, "If this signal turns out to be a black hole, it would be a highly significant discovery and the first-ever radio detection of one inside a cluster."The ATCA image of 47 Tucanae rivals the anticipated images from the Square Kilometer Array Observatory (SKAO), set to become the world's most sensitive radio telescope upon completion later this decade. The SKAO, currently under construction in Western Australia and South Africa, comprises thousands of radio antennas.Tim Galvin, a research scientist at CSIRO and co-author of the study, highlights the project's technological advancements, stating, "Alessandro's research represents a culmination of years of research and technological advancements, and ATCA's ultra-deep image of 47 Tucanae represents just the beginning of the discoveries that are yet to come."Arash Bahramian, overseeing the project at Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy, emphasizes the achievement of achieving SKA-quality science with current-generation telescopes. He envisions the technique's future role in enhancing the power of SKAO to detect the faintest cosmic objects, offering a glimpse into the exciting capabilities of the next generation of radio telescopes.

Urging the need for an immediate investigation, Barcena refrained from providing further details on the matter. The issue of arms smuggling was a focal point of discussions between the two nations in Washington on Friday, where Barcena and other high-ranking Mexican officials were on an official visit.Mexico has consistently held the United States responsible, citing its lenient gun laws as the catalyst for the continuous flow of weapons to Mexican cartels, often funded by drug sales to US consumers. The Mexican government has taken legal action by filing two lawsuits in US courts against the firearms industry. On Monday, US Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, emphasized that curbing the flow of weapons from the US to Mexico is a priority for President Joe Biden. Salazar noted that 70 percent of the weapons causing violence in Mexico originate from the United States.Mexican authorities estimate that over half a million weapons are trafficked into the country annually from the United States. Despite Mexico's stringent controls on weapons sales, obtaining firearms legally is nearly impossible, leading to the prevalence of drug-related violence involving firearms.Since 2006, when the Mexican government deployed the military to combat drug trafficking, there have been over 420,000 murders, with the majority attributed to criminal gangs.
