Australia, Japan Agree to Collaborate For Strengthen Undersea Warfare Capabilities

Defense News ,Japan & Australia :- Australia and Japan have recently forged an agreement aimed at exploring potential collaborations to enhance their capabilities in undersea warfare. The deal, established between Canberra’s Defense Science and Technology Group and Tokyo’s Acquisition Technology and Logistics Agency, focuses on advancing research in underwater robotic and autonomous systems. While specific platforms were not disclosed, the collaboration is expected to significantly improve undersea communication and interoperability between these two close allies of the United States.

The project's primary goal is to establish a foundation for future joint research on robotic and collaborative autonomy, with the ultimate aim of delivering advanced capabilities that will provide both nations with an asymmetric advantage in the undersea domain, as noted by the Australian Department of Defence.

Australia’s chief defense scientist, Tanya Monro, emphasized that this agreement underscores the strengthening defense science and technology relationship between Japan and Australia. She highlighted that the collaboration is essential for delivering science and technology products that would be challenging to achieve independently by Canberra. The partnership also plays a crucial role in enabling both nations to maintain a technological edge in the rapidly changing strategic environment.

This collaboration builds upon previous defense cooperation between Australia and Japan. In October 2022, the two nations agreed to share sensitive intelligence and deepen defense cooperation, with a focus on countering the military rise of China. Joint naval drills were conducted to enhance collective planning and the implementation of advanced warfare tactics.

The increasing military ties between Canberra and Tokyo have not gone unnoticed by China, which has expressed caution to Australia, considering Japan's historical attacks during World War II. Despite historical sensitivities, Australia and Japan are forging ahead with their collaborative efforts, signaling a commitment to regional security and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
