Space News , India :- The Plasma Analyser Package for Aditya (PAPA) payload onboard the Aditya-L1 has been operational and performing nominally. Its advanced sensors have successfully detected the impact of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) including those that occurred during February 10-11, 2024.PAPA is an energy and mass analyzer designed for in-situ measurements of solar wind electrons and ions in the low energy range. It has two sensors: the Solar Wind Electron Energy Probe (SWEEP, measuring electrons in the energy range of 10 eV to 3 keV) and the Solar Wind Ion Composition Analyser (SWICAR, measuring ions in the energy range of 10 eV to 25 keV and mass range of 1-60 amu). The sensors are also equipped to measure the direction of arrival of solar wind particles.The payload has been operational since December 12, 2023. Its observations during the Halo Orbit Insertion (HOI) phase are shown in Figure 1. The figure illustrates the time series of SWEEP electron energy spectra and total count observed during the HOI phase and the period preceding and succeeding it. It reveals about three-order magnitude change in electron counts from 10 eV to 3000 eV. The majority of electrons have energy below 40 eV. It displays an excellent signal-to-noise ratio and energy resolution. Drastic reduction in the electron energy spectra and the total count occurs during the HOI phase due to the change in payload orientation away from the sun direction during this orbit maneuvering period. This is also evident in the ion energy spectra observed using SWICAR (Figure 2).Figure 2 shows the time series of SWICAR ion energy spectra and integrated counts during the specified timeframe. It exhibits the expected patterns of ion energy spectra under normal space weather conditions. The ion energy spectrum indicates the dominance of protons (H+ @ 1 amu at around 800 eV) and alpha particles (He++ @ 2 amu at around 1600 eV). The ability of SWICAR to identify individual ion masses aligns with its design.The electron (SWEEP) and ion (SWICAR) energy spectra observed before and after the HOI phase are comparable.The data collected by PAPA revealed the occurrence of Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) events, notably on December 15, 2023, and during February 10-11, 2024, as shown in Figures 3 and 4. The CME on December 15, 2023, was a single event. PAPA observations during this period (Figure 3) showed an abrupt increase in total electron and ion counts and the time variations align with the solar wind parameters and magnetic field measurements obtained from the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) and Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) satellites at the L1 point. In contrast, the observed variations in electron and ion counts during February 10-11, 2024 are the result of multiple minor events, with differences in the time variations of electrons and ions.The SWEEP and SWICAR sensors on PAPA-Aditya-L1 are currently making continuous observations of solar wind electrons and ions in the default mode, demonstrating that they are performing as per the design in all modes of operations. The observations made by PAPA emphasize its effectiveness in monitoring space weather conditions and its capability to detect and analyze solar phenomena.The PAPA payload is developed by the Space Physics Laboratory and Avionics Entity of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC)/ISRO.

Defense News ,India :- In a recent G20 ministerial meeting, India emphasized the need for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations (UN) and its Security Council, labeling the current multilateral governance structure as "outdated." The meeting, under the presidency of Brazil, addressed crucial global issues and outlined the necessity for urgent changes to the existing international framework.V Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs, highlighted the urgency of multilateral reforms, emphasizing a fourfold approach. Firstly, he stressed the importance of making international financial institutions more representative and effective. Secondly, he called for improvements in the working methods of international organizations. Thirdly, he advocated for the multilateral system to prioritize common causes over individual interests. Lastly, he underlined the need for comprehensive UN reforms, including those concerning the UN Security Council.India has been a strong proponent of UN Security Council reform, advocating for its inclusion as a permanent member at the UN high table. The country aims to address geopolitical issues constructively and find common ground with other nations.During the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Muraleedharan addressed various international tensions. Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, India called for an urgent return to dialogue and diplomacy. On the Israel-Palestine issue, India expressed support for a two-state solution. Muraleedharan condemned terrorism in all its forms and urged against the spread of conflict in West Asia. He emphasized the importance of security on high seas, especially in the Red Sea, and highlighted the critical nature of ensuring the safety of sea lanes of communication.Reiterating India's commitment to sustainable development, Muraleedharan reminded the gathering that the G20, as an economic forum, should focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate change. He pledged steadfast support to Brazil during its presidency, aligning with the theme of the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting: 'Building a Just World & a Sustainable Planet,' which resonates with India's vision of 'One Earth, One Family, One Future.'The G20 Foreign Ministers have been convening since 2012, with the recent meeting in Rio marking the 10th session. Over the years, this forum has grown in significance, providing a valuable platform for discussions on international issues among G20 members.Media reports indicate that Brazil's Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, echoed India's sentiments, calling for reforms of the UN and other multilateral institutions. He criticized their inability to prevent global conflicts, citing the UN Security Council's failure to address ongoing crises in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip. Vieira emphasized the inadequacy of current multilateral institutions in dealing with contemporary challenges, highlighting the unacceptable paralysis of the Security Council in addressing conflicts.

Space News ,India :- On February 28th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will mark the beginning of the construction of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) second spaceport in Kulasekarapattinam, Thoothukudi district.The decision to create a new rocket launch pad in Tamil Nadu was made by the central government, as the existing launch pad in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, was handling ISRO's space projects. After careful research, Kulasekarapatnam in Thoothukudi was chosen as the ideal location for the new rocket launch pad.ISRO is gearing up to start the construction of the Rs 950-crore greenfield rocket launch facility, which will cover 233 acres of land. Government sources indicate that it will take at least two years for the spaceport to be fully operational.In addition to the spaceport, PM Modi will be part of a government event at Thoothukudi Port where various other projects will be launched.During the visit, PM Modi will also inaugurate the new railway suspension bridge in the middle of the Rameswaram Pamban Sea, constructed at a cost of Rs 550 crore.To ensure the safety of the town ahead of PM Modi’s visit, security measures have been intensified in Thoothukudi. Central Industrial Security Forces and Coast Guards have been deployed for 24-hour patrols in the area, covering the route from Rameswaram Pamban to Kanyakumari three times a day until February 28th.

This deal involves acquiring close-in weapon systems, and a standout component is the "Made in India" Close-in Weapon System (CIWS), developed based on L&T's Sudarshan SHORAD system.The Sudarshan SHORAD is a cutting-edge Short-Range Air Defense System made by L&T Defence. It comes with impressive features:1. 3D Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar: This radar provides complete 360-degree coverage, spotting airborne threats early on.2. Sophisticated threat identification: The system can accurately recognize and categorize drones, helicopters, and low-flying aircraft.3. Effective engagement: The CIWS is designed to effectively counter these threats, safeguarding critical assets and installations.The Sudarshan SHORAD system consists of three main parts:1. Tracking Radar and Command & Control Unit: This unit gives situational awareness and coordinates defense actions.2. Fire Control Radar: It accurately tracks and targets incoming threats.3. Firing Unit: It delivers precise firepower to neutralize threats.This approval is a big leap for India's air defense capabilities. Defense News ,India :- The Indian government has given the green light to a ₹6,000 crore project to set up powerful radars along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). These radars, built by Larsen & Toubro, will keep an eye on the activities of the Chinese Air Force. The plan is to place these "Made in India" radars along the LAC and the Line of Control with Pakistan, mainly focusing on monitoring the Chinese Air Force in the Ladakh region.According to defense sources, it's relatively easy to cover radar in the western areas of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Gujarat. However, it becomes challenging from Jammu and Kashmir up to Arunachal Pradesh in the Northeast due to the mountainous terrain. The improved radar coverage is crucial because of suspicious activities by the Chinese force on the eastern front.The Chinese Air Force has been testing Indian responses in the Ladakh region, particularly in the Demchok sector. In response, the Indian Air Force scrambled fighter jets to the area. The new high-power radars are designed to detect threats from the air at long distances, providing early warnings to the Indian Air Force. Additionally, these radars will be integral to India's Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) system, tracking and engaging incoming ballistic missiles.The radars will be Equipped with Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology, these radars offer superior detection, tracking, and jamming resistance compared to conventional ones. The Indian Air Force plans to install a significant number of these radars in phases, with the next phase focusing on fully indigenous radars, promoting self-reliance and strengthening India's defense capabilities.Another project approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security, led by Prime Minister Modi, is the acquisition of Close-in Weapon Systems. These systems will be deployed to safeguard essential assets and locations, according to top defense sources.

Defense News ,Taiwan :- The US State Department has given the green light for a potential $75 million upgrade to Taiwan's Advanced Tactical Data Link System. This package includes various equipment like cross domain solutions, high assurance devices, GPS receivers, and communications gear.The Defense Security Cooperation Agency explained that this proposed sale aims to enhance Taiwan's ability to handle current and future threats by improving communication and network security. It will also establish a secure infrastructure for the flow of tactical information.The contractor for this project will be selected through a competitive process.In a related move last year, Washington decided to upgrade Taiwan's Link 16 data link system to NATO's Link-22. This upgrade offers a broader range and a direct connection to the US military. Link-22 is a secure communication capability that connects air, surface, subsurface, and ground-based tactical data systems.This approval follows China's recent sanctions on five US defense contractors, including BAE Systems Land and Armaments, AeroVironment, Viasat, Alliant Techsystems Operation, and Data Link Solutions. These sanctions were imposed in response to the arms sales to Taiwan, resulting in the freezing of their properties in China.

Defense News ,Russia Ukraine War :- A Russian drone hit a commercial area in Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odessa, killing one person, with others possibly still trapped under rubble, the Ukrainian military said on Friday.The military's Southern Forces, in a post on the Telegram messaging app, said it had intercepted nine drones, but one of them struck an area near the port and triggered a fire.Firefighters recovered one body and said other residents might still be under the rubble as emergency teams worked to bring the blaze under control. A female security guard was rescued unharmed from a building, the post said.The military said missiles were also used in the attack, but they had failed to hit any targets.Pictures posted by the military show heavy damage to buildings in the area and rescue teams making their way through debris.In the central city of Dnipro, a Russian drone hit a multi-storey apartment building, injuring four people, the regional governor said.Serhiy Lysak, governor of Dnipropetrovsk region, wrote on Telegram that search operations were proceeding through the night and other residents might still be under rubble.Reuters was unable to verify independently the accounts.
