Defense News , India :- In response to a recent piracy incident, the Indian Navy has strategically deployed an indigenous guided missile destroyer in the Gulf of Aden region. The decision, outlined in a statement from the Defence Ministry, aims to bolster anti-piracy efforts in the area and underscores the Indian Navy unwavering commitment to safeguarding merchant shipping and assisting mariners as a primary responder.
The incident in question occurred on the night of December 14, involving a Malta-flagged vessel named MV Ruen, which was reportedly boarded by six unknown individuals. The UKMTO portal raised the alarm, prompting swift action from the Indian Navy. On December 15, a Maritime Patrol Aircraft was dispatched to investigate, establishing communication with the vessel"s crew. Fortunately, all 18 crew members, none of whom were Indian, were found safe in the citadel.
In tandem with this response, INS Kochi, engaged in anti-piracy patrol in the Gulf of Aden, was immediately diverted to provide assistance. Subsequent events unfolded as the destroyer intercepted MV Ruen on December 16, deploying its integral helicopter to assess the situation. Disturbingly, it was revealed that the pirates had breached the citadel and were holding the entire crew hostage. Despite refraining from armed intervention to ensure crew safety, INS Kochi took necessary measures to ensure the pirates treated the crew appropriately.
The international response to the incident saw a Japanese warship arriving in the area on December 16, later relieved by the Spanish warship ESPNS Victoria. These vessels closely monitored the hijacked vessel"s transit towards Somalia, engaging with the pirates and coordinating actions. Eventually, the hijacked vessel entered Somalia territorial waters off Bosaso on December 17.
Crucially, INS Kochi efforts resulted in the release of the injured crew member by the pirates in the early hours of December 18. Although the crew member received initial medical attention onboard, the severity of the injuries necessitated urgent medical care beyond the ship capabilities. Consequently, the injured crew member was transferred ashore to Oman on December 19 for further medical management.
