Defense News ,India :- In a significant accomplishment, Ordnance Factory Medak (OFMK) has successfully concluded its annual flotation trials for the indigenous BMP-II Infantry Combat Vehicles on December 21, 2023, at Malkapur lake in Sangareddy. These trials underscore the vehicles readiness for amphibious warfare, a critical capability in contemporary infantry combat.
During the meticulous testing, two newly manufactured BMP-II vehicles and one refurbished variant, all part of this year production, underwent rigorous evaluation under the supervision of OFMK officials and the Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGQA). Despite their considerable 14-tonne weight, these remarkable machines exhibited remarkable agility both on land and in water. On land, they effortlessly reached speeds of 60 kmph, while in water, they maintained a steady 7 kmph, showcasing their versatility across diverse terrains.
The BMP-IIs robust features contribute to its formidable presence on the battlefield. With a spacious interior accommodating up to eight personnel, the vehicle ensures efficient troop deployment. Advanced night vision capabilities enable effective operations in low-light conditions, and a smoke grenade launcher provides valuable cover during combat. The vehicle primary armament comprises a potent 30mm cannon and a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. Additionally, provisions for mounting an anti-tank missile launcher further enhance its firepower.
These successful trials serve as a testament to OFMKs dedication to developing and manufacturing cutting-edge military equipment. The domestically produced BMP-II Infantry Combat Vehicles offer a potent blend of firepower, mobility, and amphibious capability, significantly enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Indian Armed Forces. This achievement also underscores India increasing self-reliance in defense production, a pivotal stride towards bolstering national security and achieving strategic autonomy.
