India Expands Military Exports to Armenia with Akash Air Defense System

Defense News - India is set to enhance its strategic ties with Armenia by exporting its indigenous anti-air system, the Akash, marking another milestone in the growing list of military exports to the Asian nation. This comprehensive deal, estimated at ₹6,000 crore, includes a range of military hardware such as multi-barrel rocket launchers, artillery guns, various ammunition types, and drones.

Manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), deliveries of the Akash anti-air systems are expected to commence soon, solidifying India commitment to bolstering Armenia defense capabilities. The Akash system, currently in service with the Indian Armed Forces, has garnered interest from other nations like Vietnam and the Philippines.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) spearheaded the design and development of an improved version of the Akash system. Noteworthy features include a reduced footprint, 360° engagement capability, and advanced seekers, enhancing its effectiveness in countering aerial threats. With an impressive 82% indigenous content, the project also allocates 60% of its cost to the private industry, including Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), thereby maintaining a robust supply chain for the system.

Back in April, the Indian defense ministry hinted at an undisclosed export order for the Akash anti-air system, withholding details about the recipient nation. In March of the same year, the Indian Army procured two additional regiments of the air defense system in a deal valued at ₹8,160 crore, further underscoring the system importance in safeguarding national security.

Its worth noting that in November of the previous year, Kalyani Strategic Systems secured a $155 million deal with an undisclosed overseas customer for artillery guns. Significantly, this export order was also destined for Armenia, demonstrating India commitment to fortifying Armenia defense infrastructure through various advanced military technologies.
