Defense News , Ukraine :- Ukraine Deputy Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Ivan Gavrylyuk, has announced the country intent to acquire advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced Caesar wheeled artillery, aiming to elevate the precision of the weapon targeting and firing mechanisms.
The anticipated upgrade is poised to significantly enhance the accuracy of the French-manufactured Caesar artillery, resulting in a remarkable 30 percent reduction in ammunition consumption, as highlighted by Gavrylyuk during discussions with a delegation from the Senate of the French Parliament.
During the meeting, Minister Gavrylyuk emphasized the scheduled fire management trials for Caesar, utilizing cutting-edge artificial intelligence, set to take place in 2024. Encouraging increased cooperation, the minister urged the French delegates to supply a larger quantity of ammunition specifically tailored for the Nexter 155mm howitzer.
Caesar Presence in Ukraine
Since 2022, Ukraine has received a total of 49 Caesar artillery systems, with 19 units sourced from Denmark, according to Nexter CEO Nicolas Chamussy statement to Defense News in October. Notably, 18 units have been directly supplied from the French Army inventory, while Ukraine acquired an additional 12 from Nexter parent company, KNDS.
The Caesar wheeled artillery, mounted on trucks, boasts the capability of firing six rounds per minute, reaching distances of up to 40 kilometers (25 miles). Impressively, the platform can achieve speeds of 80 kilometers (50 miles) per hour, covering a remarkable 600 kilometers (373 miles) without the need for refueling.
