Ukraine Hybrid ‘FrankenSAM’ Air Defense Solution Registers First Kill

Defense News ,Ukraine & Russia War :- Ukraine successfully intercepted a Russian kamikaze drone on Wednesday, employing an innovative air defense system known as "FrankenSAM." The improvised system achieved its first successful engagement by downing the Shahed drone from a distance of 9 kilometers (approximately 5.59 miles), according to Ukrainian Minister of Strategic Industries Oleksandr Kamyshin.

The Shahed drone attack targeted various regions, including Zaporizhzhya, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kirovohrad. Ukrainian air defenses, bolstered by "anti-aircraft missile units and mobile fire groups," managed to intercept 19 out of the 20 Shahed drones, suggesting the possible involvement of the FrankenSAM system in the successful defense.

Kamyshin confirmed the deployment of the FrankenSAM system during the operation, stating, "One of the systems was successfully used for the first time today (January 17) at night." He emphasized that this marked a significant milestone, with approximately five such projects already deployed on the battlefield.

The FrankenSAM project, a portmanteau of "Frankenstein" and "surface-to-air missiles," is a US-led initiative aimed at rapidly enhancing Ukraine's air defense capabilities. By integrating components from diverse air defense systems like Buk, Patriot, and Hawk, the project seeks to create an adaptive defense system.

In December, the United States provided Ukraine with the technical data necessary for local production of the FrankenSAM system. The collaborative effort involves parallel production in both countries, facilitating quicker deployment and empowering Ukraine to actively contribute to the maintenance of its air defense infrastructure, as highlighted in a statement from the White House.

The FrankenSAM systems include a range of air defense complexes, featuring combinations such as the Buk air defense system with American RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missiles, AIM-9M Sidewinder air-to-air missiles integrated with Soviet radars, and Patriot missiles paired with older Ukrainian radar systems. Additionally, the project involves modernizing outdated air defense systems like the decades-old Hawk, ensuring a comprehensive and effective defense strategy for Ukraine.
