Defense News ,U.S :- This project started in 2020 and was previously called the National Defense Space Architecture. Back then, SDA signed a deal with L3Harris, Space Exploration Technologies, and SpaceX to build special satellites for the Tranche 0 program.
All of these satellites are part of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. This plan aims to use space technology for missions happening on Earth.
The satellites will focus on finding and tracking missiles flying at altitudes lower than 2,000 kilometers (1,243 miles).
Derek Tournear, the director of SDA, says it's crucial for the space industry to work quickly. They want to make sure the military gets these satellites for missile warning, tracking, and defense.
If everything goes as planned, these 54 satellites will be launched by April 2027. This depends on the defense budget getting approved by the end of March.
The contracts with these three companies are worth a total of $2.5 billion.
These new satellites will join the older ones in the Tranche 2 Tracking Layer. Together, they will form a network of 270 satellites for transportation and tracking.
L3Harris, Lockheed Martin, and Sierra Space are the companies that will each make 18 satellites. These satellites are part of SDA’s Tranche 2 Tracking Layer program. They will have special sensors to warn about missiles, track them, and control defenses against them.
The US Space Development Agency (SDA) is teaming up with three companies to make 54 satellites. These satellites will help track missiles all around the world.
