UK FSS Ships to Receive Hybrid Propulsion Systems

Defense News ,U.K :- The Fleet Solid Support (FSS) ships of the Royal Navy are set to get a technology upgrade for better fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. The consortium responsible for building these ships has chosen GE Vernova, an American energy technology company, to supply the hybrid-electric propulsion systems. The delivery of these systems is expected to start in 2025, with subsequent waves planned for 2026 and 2027.

The FSS ships, which serve to provide equipment to naval vessels at sea, are part of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and are designed with a focus on green technology to promote low-carbon and sustainable operations.

GE Vernova will produce SeaPulse Active Front-End power converters and Power Take-Off/Power Take-In hybrid electric induction motor generators for this project. Additionally, the company will handle testing, sea trials, certification, and logistics services to ensure the effective implementation of this advanced technology.

Andy Cooper, the Managing Director of GE Vernova UK Power Conversion, expressed confidence in their hybrid-electric propulsion technology, emphasizing its potential to improve the Royal Fleet Auxiliary's operational efficiency and align with the UK's commitment to sustainability.

In a previous contribution in 2022, the team played a role in enhancing the energy efficiency of the RFA's Tide-class tankers. The Power Conversion group from the company configured the propulsion power systems of these ships, ensuring high-performance electric power for replenishment-at-sea missions and keeping pace with the navy's combat ships.
