Norway Sends F-35 Aircraft to Iceland for NATO Defense

Defense News ,Norway :- Norway is getting ready to send four powerful F-35 combat aircraft to Iceland's Keflavík Air Base in the first of three NATO fighter deployments this year. These top-notch planes will be on standby at the air base, always ready to take off quickly and protect the airspace in the region for NATO and international safety.

The Norwegian team will not just be sitting around; they'll be part of important training and alert drills. This includes practicing how to identify unknown aircraft, making sure everyone is on their toes to keep the alliance safe.

This mission is all part of NATO's plan to keep the peace in the air, known as Air Policing. The goal is to protect the airspace by working together. Keflavík Air Base has been hosting NATO's fighter aircraft since 2008, making it a key location for these important missions.

Now, even though Iceland doesn't have its own military, it plays a crucial role in NATO's defense plans. Iceland uses its air defense and surveillance systems, including four radar sites and a central air command and control network, to help allied forces keep an eye on the sky.

Iceland's waters are also used for important NATO exercises, like Dynamic Mongoose, which helps the alliance practice dealing with threats under the water. Even without a military, Iceland contributes to NATO's work by providing financial support and civilian personnel. This small country might not have an army, but it's a big part of keeping the High North safe.
