Defense News , India G20 Summit :- In
a recent revelation at the annual conference, Rajesh Kumar, the CEO of
the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), disclosed that the
Indian cybersecurity sector successfully repelled numerous cyberattack
attempts on the G20 portal during the summit. The staggering revelation
highlighted a peak of 16 lakh Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS)
attacks per minute at some point during the event.
Established by
the Ministry of Home Affairs, the I4C aims to create a framework and
eco-system for Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) to address cybercrime in a
coordinated and comprehensive manner. Kumar, responding to inquiries,
emphasized that the onslaught of attacks on the G20 account commenced
shortly after the website went live and reached its zenith during the
summit.
Despite the intensity of the attacks, Kumar reassured
that the I4C, collaborating with various Indian agencies, effectively
thwarted the cyber threats, ensuring the safety and integrity of the G20
portal. He expressed concerns about non-national foreign threat actors
operating through Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), originating from
locations such as China, Cambodia, and Malaysia. However, he
acknowledged the challenge in pinpointing the exact location due to the
masking effect of VPN networks on the hackers" true identities.
According
to cyber experts, the DDoS attacks were likely orchestrated by
non-national threat actors with the intention of disrupting and
sabotaging the G20 portal, potentially originating from foreign
countries.
Providing additional insights, Kumar shared that over
31 lakh cybercrime complaints have been registered on the National
Cybercrime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) since its launch in
August 2019. Based on these complaints, more than 66,000 First
Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed by Law Enforcement Agencies
across states and union territories.
Furthermore, Kumar revealed
that the I4C has compiled an analytical report on the modus operandi of
the top 50 cyber-attacks during 2023. The CEO also highlighted the
significant role played by the National Cyber Helpline Number 1930,
stating that concerned agencies, with its assistance, managed to save
over Rs 1,100 crore in defrauded money over three years, benefiting 4.3
lakh victims.
