Defense News ,South China Sea :- In response to recent joint naval exercises conducted by India and the Philippines in the disputed South China Sea, the Chinese military conveyed its displeasure on Thursday, emphasizing that defense cooperation between nations should not compromise the interests of third parties or regional peace.
Senior Colonel Wu Qian, the spokesperson for the Chinese Defence Ministry, addressed inquiries from Chinese official media regarding the naval exercises involving an Indian naval ship and a Philippine naval vessel, as well as France plans to conduct naval and air drills with the Philippine Navy. Colonel Wu noted that China is aware of these reports and stressed the importance of defense and security cooperation that does not undermine the interests of other nations or jeopardize regional stability.
China growing unease is linked to increased military collaboration between the Philippines and other countries. Recent incidents involving face-offs between Chinese coastguard ships and the Philippine Navy further heightened tensions over Beijing territorial claims in the South China Sea, which are contested by Manila.
Colonel Wu clarified that China has consistently emphasized the need for cooperation between nations to respect the interests of third parties and uphold regional peace and stability. He expressed China concerns over maritime disputes, particularly with the Philippines, characterizing them as issues to be resolved exclusively between the involved nations without interference from third parties.
Addressing allegations that Chinese coastguard ships used water cannons against Philippine vessels, Colonel Wu dismissed these claims as "purely false hype." According to him, the Philippines disregarded warnings from China, intruding into disputed areas claimed by both countries and causing damage to a Chinese coastguard vessel. He defended China actions as necessary enforcement measures taken in accordance with the law.
In response to criticism from the United States regarding actions by Chinese coastguard ships against Philippine vessels, and references to Washington commitments under the Mutual Defense Treaty with Manila, Colonel Wu expressed strong dissatisfaction. He accused the U.S. of instigating the Philippines to provoke China and reiterated China indisputable sovereignty over the disputed areas claimed by Manila.
The Chinese military affirmed its commitment to maintaining a high level of vigilance and taking necessary measures to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and maritime rights in the face of heightened tensions in the South China Sea.
