China Incapable of Successfully Invading Taiwan :US and Taiwanese Experts

Defense News ,Taiwan :- A recent survey conducted among American and Taiwanese security experts suggests that a majority do not believe China possesses sufficient military capabilities to successfully invade Taiwan. Out of the 52 US experts surveyed, only 27 percent expressed confidence in the People's Liberation Army's (PLA) ability to execute an amphibious invasion.

Key considerations influencing this skepticism include the belief that immediate intervention by American forces would occur if China were to launch an attack on Taiwan. The complexity and extensive military commitment required for an amphibious invasion were cited as significant deterrents.

According to the survey, a resounding 96% of US experts were either completely or moderately confident in the likelihood of US military intervention to defend Taiwan within the next five years.

The respondents, comprising experts with diverse backgrounds in government, academia, and think tanks, contributed to a comprehensive analysis of the geopolitical landscape.

Taiwanese experts, who also participated in the survey, demonstrated a more conservative stance compared to their American counterparts. Only 17 percent of Taiwanese respondents "somewhat agreed" that China had the capability to carry out an amphibious invasion.

However, the survey uncovered a nuanced perspective among Taiwanese experts regarding the likelihood of support from the US and its allies in the event of a conflict. While 29 percent of US experts were confident in multinational military assistance, only 15 percent of Taiwanese experts shared the same confidence. Notably, 40 percent of Taiwanese experts expressed a lack of confidence in external support.

Growing concerns about a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan have intensified amid improving ties between Taipei and the US, its crucial ally. The PLA's simulated Taiwan strikes in April 2023 and continued illegal incursions into Taiwan's exclusive zone have heightened tensions. Some US intelligence experts now anticipate a possible Chinese invasion by 2027, underscoring the evolving dynamics in the region.
