ATHENS, GREECE — The Hellenic Navy and Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI) have selected Terma’s SCANTER 6002 surveillance radar for the mid-life modernization of Greece’s four MEKO 200 HN (Hydra-class) frigates.
Radar to Integrate With Centaur and TACTICOS
HAI will integrate the SCANTER 6002 with its Centaur counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS). The radar will also interface with the Thales TACTICOS combat management system.
The integration will allow radar detection data to be shared through the Centaur system and TACTICOS, giving operators a unified picture of activity around the frigates.
Centaur provides passive detection and electronic jamming capabilities and has already been used operationally, including during Operation Aspides in the Red Sea, where it successfully intercepted and neutralized drones.
SCANTER 6002 Capabilities
The X-band SCANTER 6002 is designed to detect and track small, low-signature air and surface targets while also monitoring surface traffic and the lower airspace around a vessel.
The radar uses GaN (gallium nitride) solid-state technology, advanced digital signal processing, high spatial resolution and automatic adaptation to sea and land clutter. It also includes an AI-based classifier to help operators distinguish small drones from other targets.
These features are designed to support operations in both coastal and open-water environments while reducing operator workload.
Part of Hydra-Class Modernization
The radar selection is part of the wider mid-life modernization program for the four Hydra-class frigates. The program includes the installation of the latest TACTICOS combat management system and other sensors, with the modernization intended to extend the ships’ operational capability into the 2030s.
Kyriakos Enotiadis, Director of the Electronics Plant Directorate at HAI, said the integration of SCANTER 6002, Centaur and TACTICOS will provide information for counter-UAS operations while improving the frigates’ wider situational awareness.
Martin Jentsch, Terma’s Sales Director for Naval Sales, said the combination of the radar and Centaur will provide real-time information across the counter-drone chain.
The SCANTER 6002 has also been fitted to the 12 Arafura-class offshore patrol vessels of the Royal Australian Navy and selected for new anti-submarine warfare frigates of the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as Canada’s Arctic and offshore patrol ships.
The modernization brings together the Hellenic Navy, HAI, Thales and Terma to improve the frigates’ ability to detect and respond to small air and surface threats.
