NEW DELHI, — GE Aerospace has delivered three more F404-IN20 engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for India’s Tejas Mk1A fighter aircraft programme.
The engines were delivered in August 2026, taking the total number of F404-IN20 engines delivered to HAL for the Tejas Mk1A programme to 10.
The deliveries are part of a contract signed in 2021, under which GE Aerospace is to supply 99 F404-IN20 engines and associated support to HAL. The agreement is valued at around ₹5,375 crore (approximately $716 million).
Engine deliveries have been slower than originally planned, affecting the pace of Tejas Mk1A production. GE Aerospace has been working to increase F404-IN20 production and address earlier supply-chain problems.
The F404-IN20 is an uprated version of the F404 engine family and produces up to 85 kN (19,000 lbf) of afterburning thrust. It is equipped with a Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system.
The Indian Air Force has ordered 180 Tejas Mk1A aircraft from HAL. In November 2025, HAL also placed a follow-on order with GE Aerospace for 113 additional F404-IN20 engines to support a further 97 Tejas Mk1A aircraft, with deliveries scheduled from 2027 to 2032.
The latest three-engine shipment is expected to support HAL’s efforts to maintain the Tejas Mk1A production schedule as GE continues to increase engine deliveries.
