BENGALURU, — Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has showcased its X-Band Battery Multi-Function Radar (X-BMFR) to a visiting Japanese delegation, highlighting a key component of India’s Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) air-defence system.
The X-BMFR is an X-band AESA radar with four fixed panels, each covering 90 degrees to provide continuous 360-degree coverage without mechanical rotation. BEL states that the radar has an 80-kilometre tracking range and uses Quad Transmit/Receive Modules (QTRMs). It also integrates an electro-optical tracking system for target identification and tracking.
Mounted on an 8x8 high-mobility truck, the radar can conduct surveillance, target acquisition, tracking and threat prioritisation while moving. It also supports mid-course missile guidance through a two-way data link, along with Radio Communication on the Move (ROTM) and Satellite Communication on the Move (SOTM).
Within the QRSAM system, the X-BMFR works with the C-band Battery Surveillance Radar (BSR), which has a stated detection range of 120 kilometres. Both radars provide 360-degree coverage, use QTRMs and incorporate Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) capability. The system is designed to engage multiple aerial targets, including aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles.
QRSAM was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with BEL and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). A combat group combines a BMFR with a missile launcher carrying six canisterised missiles. The QRSAM missile has a stated range of approximately 25–30 kilometres and can engage targets at altitudes of up to about 10 kilometres. Its guidance system combines inertial navigation, two-way data-link updates and an active radar seeker for terminal guidance.
The system supports search-on-the-move, track-on-the-move and fire-on-short-halt operations. Its components are designed for road, rail and air transport and for all-weather operation in plains, semi-desert and desert terrain, with electronic counter-countermeasures features.
The demonstration to Japanese officials highlights BEL’s indigenous radar technology and its integration into a mobile air-defence system intended to protect armoured formations. The Ministry of Defence’s Defence Acquisition Council approved the procurement of three QRSAM regiments in July 2025, while BEL has also been preparing additional production capacity for the system.
