HENSOLDT is supplying the Ukrainian armed forces with advanced AMPS (Airborne Missile Protection System) solutions, bolstering helicopter defenses against missile threats.
HENSOLDT, a leading provider of sensor solutions, is enhancing the Ukrainian armed forces' helicopter fleet with advanced detection and self-protection technology. The company has received an order valued in the double-digit millions to deliver additional AMPS (Airborne Missile Protection System) self-protection solutions to Ukraine. This follows a previous delivery of 16 AMPS units in June of the prior year.
AMPS is designed to significantly increase the defense capabilities of helicopters, protecting crews from a wide array of threats, including surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles. The system includes several key components:
- Missile Launch Detection Sensor (MILDS): Detects incoming missile threats.
- AMPS Control and Display Unit (ACDU): Manages the system's functions.
- Active Confirmation System (MACS): Confirms missile threats by measuring distance and speed, reducing false alarms.
- Counter Measure Dispensing Systems (CMDS): Works with existing dispensing systems to deploy countermeasures.
According to Tanya Altmann, Head of the Optronics & Land Solutions Division at HENSOLDT, integrating AMPS into Ukrainian helicopters provides critical protection for crews in increasingly hostile environments. The modular design of AMPS allows it to be tailored to specific operational needs and different mission profiles, making it a versatile addition to any fleet.
Modern warfare has seen a high percentage of aircraft losses due to infrared surface-to-air missiles (IR SAMs). To address this, AMPS can be equipped with missile, laser, and radar warning systems, ensuring rapid and reliable threat detection. This comprehensive protection is crucial as laser and radar threats become more common in combat zones.
HENSOLDT's AMPS has already been deployed on over 2,000 different aircraft, showcasing its reliability and effectiveness in various operational theaters. With this latest order, HENSOLDT continues to support the Ukrainian armed forces by providing cutting-edge technology that enhances the survivability and operational effectiveness of their helicopter fleet.
