Denmark to buy long-range drones for surveillance operations in Arctic

Defense News ,Denmark :- The Danish Ministry of Defence has unveiled a substantial investment of 2.74 billion Danish crowns (approximately EUR 370 million) dedicated to bolstering surveillance and intelligence capabilities in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions.

As part of Denmark's comprehensive strategy to modernize its defense capabilities and align with NATO objectives, this funding will be directed towards the acquisition of state-of-the-art long-range drones. The primary purpose of deploying these drones is to closely monitor the escalating civilian and military activities in the Arctic and North Atlantic territories. These areas have gained heightened significance due to the alarming reduction of the Arctic ice sheet, triggering intensified global competition for resources and strategic passageways.

Denmark, entrusted with the defense of Greenland and the Faroe Islands, deems this substantial investment crucial for upholding security and safeguarding its interests in these vital regions.

Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen underscored the imperative for Denmark to shoulder increased responsibility for security concerns in the Arctic and North Atlantic. This strategic move aligns seamlessly with Denmark's overarching defense strategy, which includes a significant commitment made last year to invest a substantial sum of 143 billion crowns over the coming decade.

The recent funding allocation doesn't solely focus on acquiring long-range drones; it extends to other vital aspects of defense infrastructure. Specifically, funds have been earmarked for the development of advanced air defense systems and the rejuvenation of an ammunition factory located in northwestern Denmark. This marks the initial phase of Denmark's comprehensive and forward-looking defense commitment, reflecting its dedication to fortifying its national security apparatus.
