South Korea Expands Air Force Fleet with Additional F-35A Stealth Fighters

Defense News ,South Korea :- The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) of South Korea has officially affirmed the acquisition of 20 F-35A stealth fighter jets, following the US government approval in September 2023 for the purchase of these advanced aircraft from Lockheed Martin.

This procurement is a key component of South Korea ongoing efforts to fortify its military capabilities. The newly acquired F-35As are slated to be integrated into the South Korean Air Force (ROKAF) starting in 2027, augmenting the existing fleet of 39 F-35As and significantly enhancing ROKAF aerial prowess.

DAPA underscores that the recently acquired F-35As will boast superior weapons operation and enhanced security features compared to their predecessors. This upgrade aligns with South Korea three-axis defense strategy, comprising the Korea Massive Punishment & Retaliation (KMPR) system, the Kill Chain preemptive strike system, and the Korea Air and Missile Defense (KAMD) anti-missile shield.

The incorporation of these cutting-edge fighters is anticipated to play a pivotal role in maintaining the balance of power in the Korean Peninsula, especially in response to North Korea nuclear and missile threats. A DAPA representative emphasized the F-35A significance as a game-changer within South Korea three-axis system, underlining its crucial role in national defense and regional stability.

The initial batch of F-35As, delivered between 2019 and 2022, already represented a substantial enhancement in South Korea defense capabilities. The forthcoming second batch is poised to bring further advancements in performance, encompassing improved threat response, enhanced encryption/security functions, and heightened armed operation capabilities.

This strategic move underscores South Korea unwavering commitment to maintaining a robust defense posture in the face of evolving regional challenges.
