ALEPPO, Syria — A series of explosions struck a Syrian army ammunition depot near Al-Eis in southern Aleppo province early Monday, September 21, injuring four people and prompting authorities to close roads and evacuate nearby residents.
The explosions began in the Al-Hadaba area west of Al-Eis and were followed by repeated secondary detonations. The continued blasts initially prevented ambulances and rescue teams from reaching the site.
According to Syria’s Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management, four civilians were injured. One suffered shrapnel injuries, two experienced temporary breathing difficulties, and another was injured in a traffic accident while attempting to leave the area. Three families living near the depot were also evacuated.
Aleppo authorities placed security personnel on alert and closed the Aleppo-Damascus highway and other roads leading to the site as a precaution. Governor Azzam al-Gharib urged residents to remain indoors and avoid the area. Hospitals, ambulances and emergency teams were placed on standby.
Military police were deployed to secure the site, while military engineering and civil defense teams began inspecting the area for unexploded ordnance and other hazardous materials. Authorities warned residents not to approach the location or return to evacuated areas until it is declared safe.
The Syrian Defense Ministry said the incident caused property damage but no military fatalities and that an investigation was underway to determine the cause. Syrian authorities have not provided a final explanation for the explosions.
There is currently no verified evidence that the explosions were caused by an Israeli military strike. Official Syrian statements have focused on the investigation and safety operations at the site rather than attributing the incident to an external attack. Reuters reported that the Al-Eis explosion was the fourth similar blast at a Syrian weapons storage facility this month.
