STOCKHOLM, — BAE Systems has secured a contract from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to supply four Bofors 57Mk3 naval gun systems and advanced 57mm 3P programmable ammunition. Deliveries are scheduled for 2028 and 2029 as Sweden strengthens its naval capabilities.
The new guns are intended for Sweden’s future Luleå-class frigates. The Swedish Navy already operates the Bofors 57Mk3 aboard its Visby-class stealth corvettes, giving the service existing experience with the system.
Bofors 57Mk3 Naval Gun Capabilities
The Bofors 57Mk3 is a fully automatic, multirole naval gun designed for air defence, anti-surface warfare and naval fire support. It has a maximum firing rate of 220 rounds per minute, a muzzle velocity of approximately 1,035 metres per second and an effective maximum range of up to 17 kilometres.
Its automated loading system allows operators to switch between different ammunition types, supporting engagements against different threats.
57mm 3P Programmable Ammunition
The contract also includes Bofors 57mm 3P ammunition, which stands for Pre-fragmented, Programmable, Proximity-fused. The ammunition offers six programmable fuze modes, including gated proximity, time-fuzed airburst, impact and armour-piercing settings.
Combined with the gun’s high firing rate, the ammunition is designed to engage a range of targets, including drones, loitering munitions, aircraft, incoming missiles and fast attack surface craft.
BAE Systems Confirms Swedish Defence Partnership
Stefan Löfström, Marketing & Sales Director at BAE Systems Bofors, said the contract reinforces the company’s long-standing relationship with the Swedish Armed Forces and FMV.
“This contract reinforces our long-standing role as a trusted partner to the Swedish Armed Forces and FMV, and our commitment to supporting the Swedish Navy with world-class capability,” he said.
He added that the agreement demonstrates Sweden’s confidence in the Bofors 57Mk3 and its advanced 3P ammunition as important capabilities for maritime defence.
