L3Harris Details WESCAM MX-10 Role in SYPAQ’s Australian Surveillance Fleet

Canberra, Australia — L3Harris Technologies has detailed the role of its WESCAM MX-10 imaging and targeting system in Australian partner SYPAQ’s light fixed-wing surveillance fleet. The sensor supports intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions across Australia’s large operating environment, including remote areas, long distances and extensive coastlines.

SYPAQ integrates electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensors with aircraft used for airborne surveillance. The MX-10 supports missions including land surveillance, critical infrastructure monitoring, security operations, border security, disaster response, public safety and emergency search and rescue.

MX-10 Sensor Capabilities

The MX-10 is designed for aircraft with strict size, weight and power (SWaP) requirements. The turret weighs under 38 pounds (about 17.3 kg) and is less than 14 inches high, providing a compact system for smaller aircraft while supporting continuous high-definition imagery.

The system can support up to six sensors simultaneously, including high-definition thermal imaging, daylight continuous-zoom cameras and a high-sensitivity daylight spotter. An eye-safe laser rangefinder is available as an option.

Fully active four-axis stabilization and internal vibration isolation help maintain stable imagery during flight. This allows operators to detect, identify and track objects of interest and move from wide-area observation to detailed target assessment without losing image quality. The system is suited to low-altitude tactical surveillance and search-and-rescue missions from manned or unmanned platforms.

Australian Operations and Support

Australian surveillance missions can involve remote transportation corridors, energy infrastructure and sparsely populated regions. Long flight times and changing environmental conditions can make continuous observation over large areas challenging. L3Harris says effective ISR requires reliable situational awareness and timely information for decision-makers, rather than imagery collection alone.

The WESCAM MX-Series is supported by operator training, technical assistance and lifecycle sustainment. SYPAQ provides regional expertise to adapt the capability to Australian operational requirements, combining local aircrew experience with L3Harris sensor technology.

L3Harris outlined the MX-10’s role in an editorial published on October 4, 2026, with related reporting dated October 5, 2026. The company describes the MX-10 as a compact multi-sensor system for surveillance and reconnaissance from fixed-wing, rotary-wing, UAV and aerostat platforms.
