Zelensky Appeals to Trump After US Halts Ukraine Aid
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed a strong desire to mend relations with U.S. President Donald Trump after a recent suspension of U.S. military aid to Ukraine. In his first public statement since the aid halt, Zelensky emphasized his readiness to work under President Trump's leadership to achieve lasting peace in Ukraine.
The suspension of aid followed a contentious meeting between the two leaders at the White House, during which disagreements over Ukraine's approach to the ongoing conflict with Russia came to the forefront. President Trump accused Zelensky of prolonging the war, leading to a public dispute that resulted in the abrupt end of their meeting.
In an effort to de-escalate tensions, Zelensky proposed immediate measures such as a "truce in the sky," which would involve a mutual ban on missiles, long-range drones, and attacks on civilian infrastructure, as well as a "truce in the sea," contingent upon Russia's agreement. He also reiterated Ukraine's willingness to grant the U.S. preferential access to its natural resources and minerals, a deal that was initially set to be signed during the ill-fated Washington meeting.
Despite the recent discord, Zelensky underscored the importance of constructive future cooperation between Ukraine and the United States, expressing hope that under President Trump's leadership, a durable peace could be established in the region.
The international community is closely monitoring these developments, as the suspension of U.S. military aid and the strained relations between Kyiv and Washington could have significant implications for the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe.
