Ukraine Allocates Nearly EUR 60 Million Monthly for UAV Procurement to Strengthen Combat Capabilities
In a bold move to enhance its combat readiness, the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has announced a substantial monthly budget of UAH 2.5 billion (approximately EUR 57 million) for the procurement of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This funding will be directed to combat brigades within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, marking a significant step toward modernizing its battlefield operations.
The initiative empowers combat unit commanders with direct control over drone purchases, allowing them to select UAVs best suited to their specific operational needs. This decision builds on a successful pilot phase implemented in December 2024, during which the Ministry allocated UAH 2.1 billion (EUR 48 million) for drone procurement by combat units. The trial demonstrated the benefits of decentralised procurement, as commanders were able to respond quickly to immediate needs without the delays associated with centralised decision-making.
Rustem Umerov, Ukraine's Minister of Defence, expressed confidence in the expanded program, emphasising its role in strengthening the country’s defence capabilities. "This initiative gives commanders the flexibility to acquire drones most suited for front-line operations. It’s a dynamic system tailored to meet our military's evolving needs," Umerov stated.
Specifications and Strategic Goals
The funding will primarily target the procurement of reconnaissance drones, kamikaze drones, and logistical UAVs, each of which plays a critical role in modern warfare.
