US Receive BAE Systems' Advanced Radar Warning Receivers For C-130Js

In a significant boost to the US Air Force's operational capabilities, BAE Systems has secured $133 million in contracts to equip the C-130J Super Hercules military transport aircraft with advanced radar warning receivers (RWR). This initiative underscores the continued evolution of electronic warfare technology in enhancing aircraft survivability and situational awareness.

The contract centers on the delivery of BAE Systems' AN/ALR-56M Advanced RWR. This sophisticated system has a proven track record, having been deployed in the C-130J fleet and F-16 Fighting Falcon jets for over three decades. The AN/ALR-56M is pivotal in detecting and identifying hostile radar signals from both air and ground sources, ensuring that aircrews are well-informed of potential threats in real-time.

One of the standout features of the AN/ALR-56M is its capability to operate effectively in dense and complex electronic environments. It can identify and track various radar types, including modern search, tracking, and acquisition radars. Lindsay Gallagher, BAE Systems' Tactical Aircraft Electronic Warfare Director, highlighted the critical role of the AN/ALR-56M in maintaining the relevance of these aircraft against evolving threats. "The AN/ALR-56M has shown what it can bring to the fight, and it is keeping these critical aircraft relevant in contested battle spaces," Gallagher stated. She emphasized the importance of this technology in sustaining the electromagnetic warfare capabilities of the US Air Force's fleet.

This latest contract is part of a broader trend of electronic warfare advancements spearheaded by BAE Systems. In May, the company was awarded a contract to develop a radio frequency jammer for the US Navy, aimed at enhancing radar disruption and missile deflection capabilities. Additionally, BAE Systems has collaborated with DARPA on a project to enhance radio frequency sensor technology, pushing the boundaries of electronic warfare's thermal performance limits.

BAE Systems' commitment to advancing electronic warfare technology is also evident in its international partnerships. Last year, the company, alongside Leonardo, embarked on a project to modernize the radar systems of the UK Royal Air Force's Typhoon fighter jets. In 2022, BAE Systems completed the design and evaluation of components for the Pentagon's first EC-37B Compass Call electronic warfare aircraft.
