UK Ministry of Defence Approves DragonFire Laser Weapon System for Royal Navy Vessels
The UK Ministry of Defence has greenlit the installation of the DragonFire laser weapon system on Royal Navy vessels, marking a significant step forward in military capability. Led by MBDA and supported by Leonardo UK and QinetiQ, the DragonFire program is set to transition from a demonstration initiative to an operational asset for the Royal Navy. This decision aligns with the Government's Integrated Procurement Model aimed at streamlining defence procurement processes.
The program brings together expertise from leading UK companies: MBDA's extensive weapon system manufacturing experience, Leonardo's expertise in laser technology and advanced targeting, and QinetiQ's proficiency in high-energy laser sources and beam-combining technology. Recent successful firing trials have validated the effectiveness of the DragonFire system.
With a joint investment of £100 million from industry and the Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with Dstl, the program ensures the retention and growth of critical hi-tech skills, knowledge, and jobs in the UK. Moreover, future exports of DragonFire to allied nations are anticipated to further bolster these benefits.
Chris Allam, Managing Director of MBDA UK, expressed pride in leading a program that will provide the UK Armed Forces with a significant operational advantage. Mark Stead, Leonardo UK's Senior Vice President, highlighted the program's contribution to UK science and engineering, securing essential skills and capabilities domestically. Steve Wadey, Group CEO of QinetiQ, emphasized the collaborative efforts between industry and government to deliver frontline equipment.
Overall, the decision to advance the DragonFire program underscores the commitment to enhancing military capabilities while supporting UK industry and job growth.
