Türkiye’s Anadolu Shipyard Launches First New Type Landing Ship, Strengthening Naval Capabilities
Türkiye has taken a significant step in bolstering its naval power with the launch of the first vessel under the New Type Landing Ship (YLCT) project. The ceremony, held at Anadolu Shipyard, was attended by the Head of the Turkish Defence Agency (SSB), Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün, alongside high-ranking officials, including the Deputy Minister of Defence and the Commander of the Turkish Fleet.
Expressing pride in the milestone, Prof. Dr. Görgün stated, “We successfully launched the first ship of our New Type Landing Ship project. This proud day brought us one step closer to our goal of having a stronger and more deterrent navy in the Blue Homeland.” He further confirmed that eight such vessels are to be built, with the second ship set for launch within a week.
Designed to enhance the amphibious capabilities of the Turkish Navy, the YLCT will be capable of transporting three ALTAY main battle tanks or a variety of military vehicles and troops. However, its role extends beyond combat operations, as it will also contribute to humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and evacuation missions.
The YLCT is an advanced vessel, featuring a displacement of 1,166 tons, an overall length of 79.9 meters, and a beam of 11.7 meters. It has a forward draught of less than 1.0 meter and an aft draught of under 2.5 meters, allowing it to operate effectively in shallow waters. With a loading capacity of 420 tons, it can transport up to three main battle tanks in a single transfer. Its power comes from two 3,400 kW main engines driving fixed propellers, enabling a top speed of 20 knots. Additionally, its 410 m² vehicle deck can carry up to 260 tons of mixed vehicles, including either three battle tanks or 260 marines. In a pier-to-pier transfer configuration, it can transport up to seven battle tanks.
The ship is well-equipped for defense, featuring two Aselsan STAMP 12.7mm stabilized guns and two Aselsan STOP 25mm remote-controlled guns, ensuring effective protection against threats.
The YLCT is a direct continuation of Türkiye’s Ç-151 fast landing craft project, which significantly improved the country’s amphibious capabilities through high-speed, heavy-payload vessels. The project officially began in early 2024, with a contract signed in April 2024. Impressively, the first ship was launched just 10 months after the contract signing. The entire project, including all eight vessels, is set to be completed within 27 months, with the first ship expected to enter service in November 2025 and the final one by May 2027.
With the launch of the first YLCT, Türkiye is reinforcing its ability to project power and respond swiftly to military and humanitarian needs alike, marking another significant achievement for its naval modernization efforts.
