TKMS to Revolutionize Submarine Defense with IDAS Missile System Development
Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and Diehl Defence are nearing the completion of the development of the Interactive Defence and Attack System for Submarines (IDAS), a cutting-edge submarine-launched missile system designed to provide an unprecedented level of protection for submarines and their crews. The IDAS project, a collaborative effort under the IDAS Consortium, introduces a breakthrough in submarine self-defense technology, specifically enabling submarines to counter air threats even while submerged.
The IDAS system is the world’s first submarine-launched guided missile tailored to engage aerial threats, such as helicopters and maritime patrol aircraft, that pose a significant risk of detection and attack to submarines. By combining TKMS’s expertise in submarine systems and Diehl Defence’s prowess in missile technology, the project aims to deliver a game-changing capability to naval forces worldwide.
Oliver Burkhard, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, highlighted the significance of the project:
“We are delighted that this innovation project can now also be launched. At thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, we are contributing to a completely new capability in the field of submarine self-defence, while at the same time strengthening the safety of people and materials in challenging future deployment scenarios.”
The IDAS system integrates a guided missile and a specialized ejection unit that can be launched from a submarine’s standard torpedo tube. The ejection unit, designed to fit the dimensions of a heavyweight torpedo, ensures seamless compatibility with most existing submarine platforms without requiring extensive modifications. Once launched, the missile ascends to target incoming aerial threats using advanced guidance and tracking systems.
Key features of the IDAS missile include:
The compact and modular design of IDAS offers global appeal, as it can be retrofitted to virtually any submarine equipped with standard torpedo tubes. This capability makes the system a cost-effective and scalable solution for navies seeking to bolster their submarine fleet's defensive measures. With the growing reliance on submarines for surveillance and strategic deterrence, IDAS represents a timely innovation to counter increasingly sophisticated air and surface threats.
Naval forces face ever-evolving challenges, particularly from advanced maritime patrol aircraft equipped with cutting-edge sensors and weapons. The ability to counter these threats from beneath the waves significantly enhances the survivability of submarines during missions. Additionally, the IDAS system strengthens deterrence by providing a credible defensive measure, discouraging adversaries from attempting air-based detection or attacks.
By arming submarines with active defensive capabilities, IDAS reduces reliance on evasive maneuvers or stealth alone, ensuring that submarine crews remain protected in increasingly hostile maritime environments.
The development of the IDAS missile system marks a milestone in submarine defense technology. As TKMS and Diehl Defence prepare to bring this innovation to market, the system promises to redefine how submarines operate in contested waters. With its advanced guidance systems, compatibility with existing platforms, and multi-role capabilities, IDAS is set to become a cornerstone of modern submarine warfare.
This revolutionary technology not only enhances the safety of submarines and their crews but also underscores the importance of innovation in maintaining strategic superiority in naval operations.
