Romania to Buy 200 PAC-2 GEM-T Air Defence Missiles Through NSPA
Defense News ,Romania :-
Romania is taking steps to make its air defense stronger by buying 200
PAC-2 GEM-T missiles. The country Ministry of National Defense shared
this decision as part of a bigger plan supported by NATO.
This
missile purchase is part of a large contract worth USD 5.5 billion,
managed by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA). The contract
involves COMLOG, a collaboration between Raytheon and MBDA Germany. The
plan is important because it aims to provide 1,000 PATRIOT air defense
missiles, benefiting not only Romania but also key NATO members like
Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain.
Romania is investing EUR
1.09 billion in the PAC-2 GEM-T missiles. This decision reflects the
country strategic response to the changing security challenges in
Eastern Europe, especially considering Russia recent actions against
Ukraine. Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tilvar noted, "This acquisition
shows the Alliance ability to adjust to the security situations we
face."
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized the
importance of such investments in the current world situation. He
stated, "This investment demonstrates the strength of transatlantic
defense cooperation and NATO dedication to security. Increasing
ammunition production is crucial for Ukraine security and ours."
The
choice to proceed with this missile purchase aligns with the goals of
the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), led by Germany. ESSI aims to
create a complete European air and missile defense system through
collaborative efforts in acquiring equipment.
Currently, Romania
has four Patriot missile batteries, and there are plans to expand this
arsenal. This expansion follows the approval of seven systems by the US
State Department in 2017.
