Over 100 Killed in Sudan's Gezira Province Amid RSF Attacks
Paramilitary forces attacked a village in Sudan's Gezira province, resulting in over 100 deaths and numerous injuries.
At least 100 people were killed and dozens injured in an attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Wad al-Noura village in Sudan's Gezira province on Wednesday. The victims included women, children, and elderly residents, according to Mini Arko Minawi, the governor of Darfur province, who reported the incident on social media.
The RSF, which has been in conflict with the Sudanese army for over a year, used heavy artillery in the attack, besieging the village and causing extensive damage. The Madani Resistance Committee, a grassroots organization protecting residents in Wad Madani, the capital of Gezira, reported that the RSF looted the village during the assault.
In December, the RSF claimed control of Wad Madani, a city about 100 kilometers southeast of Khartoum. The city has been a refuge for hundreds of thousands displaced by the ongoing conflict. The resistance committee stated that the recent attack forced many residents, including women and children, to flee to other parts of the al-Manaqil district.
The Sudanese transitional government condemned the RSF's actions, calling for international accountability. The Transitional Sovereignty Council, established after the ouster of former president Omar al-Bashir in 2019, described the attacks as criminal acts targeting civilians and displacing them from their homes.
The RSF, on the other hand, accused the Sudanese military of planning an attack on its troops in Jabal al-Awliya. The RSF claimed to have clashed with the Sudanese army at three camps around Wad al-Noura, asserting that they would continue to combat any military movements against them.
The ongoing conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army has devastated the country, causing widespread destruction and pushing the population towards famine. More than 14,000 people have been killed, thousands wounded, and hundreds of thousands displaced since the fighting began.
The international community remains concerned about the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, urging both sides to cease hostilities and seek peaceful resolutions to the conflict.
