Lockheed Martin has introduced a new air-launched hypersonic missile designed for potential use by both the US Navy and Air Force. Originally proposed for the US Air Force’s Stand-in Attack Weapon (SiAW) program, the Mako missile is aimed at countering anti-access/area denial environments.

Rick Loy, Lockheed’s Senior Program Manager, described the Mako as a versatile weapon capable of engaging various types of targets. With its solid-fuel rocket propulsion system, the missile can perform multiple missions, including anti-surface warfare, land attack, and neutralizing enemy air defenses.

Measuring 13 feet in length and 13 inches in diameter, the Mako weighs approximately 1,300 pounds, including a 130-pound warhead. It boasts a speed of Mach 5 and incorporates multiple guidance methods for accurate targeting.

One notable feature of the Mako is its compatibility with a range of aircraft, including the F-35, F-22, F-16, F-15, F-18, and the Navy P-8. It can be internally carried by the F-35 and launched from carrier-based aircraft. Additionally, the missile can potentially be deployed from surface vessels and submarines, expanding its versatility in various operational scenarios.

Lockheed Martin emphasizes the global interest in hypersonic capabilities and aims to meet this demand by offering the Mako missile. With its readiness and adaptable design, the Mako presents a compelling option for enhancing military capabilities in confronting modern threats.
