KNDS Unveils European Main Battle Tank With Three Guns
KNDS has unveiled a groundbreaking addition to the European military landscape at Eurosatory 2024: the Enhanced Main Battle Tank (E-MBT), a formidable armored vehicle designed to address the evolving threats on the modern battlefield. This tank, now known as the EMBT ADT 140, stands out with its unprecedented array of three guns, advanced protection systems, and cutting-edge artificial intelligence.
The centerpiece of the EMBT ADT 140 is its powerful 140-millimeter Ascalon main gun, equipped with an autoloader capable of holding up to 22 rounds. This weapon promises unparalleled firepower, capable of engaging a wide range of targets with devastating precision. Complementing this main gun is a coaxial 20×102-millimeter automatic gun, designed for engaging smaller, faster-moving targets, and a remote-controlled weapon station armed with a 30-millimeter gun, adding another layer of versatility and lethality to the tank’s arsenal.
Beyond its impressive firepower, the EMBT ADT 140 is fortified with the Prometheus active protection system, which includes integral top-attack protection. This system significantly enhances the tank's survivability on the battlefield, providing a robust defense against incoming threats from all directions. The tank is also equipped with six anti-drone radars, four laser and missile warning sensors, and an acoustic gunshot detector, ensuring comprehensive situational awareness and the ability to preemptively address threats.
However, the most revolutionary aspect of the EMBT ADT 140 is its artificial intelligence-enabled fire control system. This system autonomously selects and queues weapon systems to attack targets in order of priority, streamlining the decision-making process and ensuring rapid, efficient responses to dynamic combat situations. This technology represents a significant leap forward in battlefield automation and effectiveness, setting a new standard for future armored vehicles.
The unveiling of the EMBT ADT 140 is part of KNDS' broader strategy to anticipate and influence the development of the Franco-German Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) project. The MGCS, expected to enter service in 2035, aims to replace the aging Leopard 2 and Leclerc tanks currently in use across Europe. By showcasing the EMBT ADT 140, KNDS demonstrates its capability to develop advanced combat vehicles with unmanned turrets, positioning itself as a key player in this ambitious European defense initiative.
The E-MBT’s advanced capabilities will be put to the test next month in a demonstration of its fire-on-the-move abilities. This event will not only showcase the tank’s operational prowess but also serve as a critical milestone in its development journey.
As Europe looks towards the future of armored warfare, the EMBT ADT 140 stands as a symbol of innovation and strength. With its unparalleled firepower, state-of-the-art protection systems, and revolutionary AI-enabled capabilities, this tank represents a bold step forward in military technology, poised to redefine the standards of modern combat vehicles.
