Italy Acquires First AW249 Phoenix Attack Helicopters to Replace Aging Fleet
Italy has officially procured its first batch of AW249 Fenice (Phoenix) attack helicopters from Leonardo, marking a significant step in the country’s rotor-wing modernization program. This new acquisition will replace the Agusta A129 Mangusta (Mongoose) helicopters, which have been in service since the 1990s and are now nearing the end of their operational life.
Unveiled in 2017, the AW249 program is set to deliver up to 48 helicopters to the Italian Army, with the first tranche of 17 units scheduled for delivery starting in 2027.
