Indonesia Signs Deal for Third Batch of Rafale Fighter Jets

Defense News ,Indonesia :- Dassault Aviation made a significant announcement on January 8, revealing a new chapter in its collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Defence. The aerospace company has inked a deal for the third batch of Rafale multi-role combat aircraft, a move that underscores Indonesia's commitment to enhancing its military capabilities. This latest order consists of 18 cutting-edge aircraft, marking a substantial step forward in Indonesia's ambitious plan declared in February 2022 to acquire a total of 42 Rafale jets.

The initial acquisition of six Rafale aircraft in September 2022 was followed by a second batch of 18 jets in August 2023. This strategic procurement aligns with Indonesia's broader military aviation modernization program and signifies an increasingly robust partnership between France and Indonesia. Anticipated to commence in 2026, the delivery of these advanced aircraft is poised to bolster Indonesia's role as a major regional power.

Eric Trappier, Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation, expressed optimism about the agreement, emphasizing that Indonesia's selection of the Rafale demonstrates a commitment to sovereignty and operational independence. He further highlighted the deal as a catalyst for ambitious industrial and academic collaborations, underscoring Dassault Aviation's steadfast commitment to a long-term partnership.

Beyond the Rafales, Indonesia has shown interest in procuring 24 Boeing F-15EX Eagle fighters. However, the finalization of an intergovernmental agreement with the United States has faced delays, primarily due to budgetary constraints, adding a layer of complexity to the nation's defense strategy.

The framework agreement, signed on February 10, 2022, binds Indonesia to the purchase of a total of 42 Rafale jets. Dassault Aviation initiated production only after securing the necessary financial means for each batch. The contracts for the first six Rafale jets were concluded in September 2022, followed by the approval of the second contract for 18 more jets on August 10, 2023. The present agreement marks the culmination of the orders outlined in the overarching framework agreement.

All the Rafale jets destined for Indonesia will be state-of-the-art, adhering to the latest F4 production standard. The delivery timeline is set to commence after 38 months, with subsequent jets arriving at a rate of one per month. Notably, Dassault Aviation increased its production capacity to three Rafale fighters per month by the end of 2023, responding to growing export orders and the imperative to replenish the French Air Force's fleet after selling used jets to Greece and Croatia. This production boost underlines the broader impact of international collaborations in shaping the future of military aviation.
