India Working on Leveraging AI to Enhance Defence Capabilities: DRDO Chief

Defense news ,India :- India is actively engaging in collaborative efforts with "friendly" nations to harness the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for bolstering its defense capabilities, as revealed by the head of the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), Samir V Kamat, on Thursday.

In an interview with ANI, Kamat highlighted India's joint endeavors with partner countries to advance both tools and fundamental research aimed at enhancing AI algorithms. Stressing the significance of AI in the defense sector, he emphasized its role in preventive maintenance, surveillance, and cybersecurity.

Kamat underscored the expanding role of AI in offensive actions, noting its transformative impact on military performance and efficiency. He expressed optimism about AI technology making a substantial difference in augmenting defense capabilities.

Responding to inquiries about specific collaborations, Kamat maintained that India is collaborating with nations considered friendly. He acknowledged the advantages of collaborative efforts in navigating disruptive technologies, especially in the realm of AI.

While declining to disclose specific details about the collaborative initiatives, Kamat stated, "I will not state the name of the countries with whom we are working, but we are working with friendly countries on developing tools as well as fundamental research in improving the algorithm which goes into making the AI tools."

Discussing the potential threats posed by AI, Kamat highlighted the significance of addressing cybersecurity challenges. He revealed that India is actively partnering with academic institutions to devise AI-based techniques for detecting cyber intrusions.

According to Kamat, the primary threat from AI is in the cyber domain, with numerous attacks utilizing AI-powered bots. However, he emphasized that the same AI technology can be leveraged for cyber defense. The collaborative efforts with academic institutions aim to develop AI tools capable of identifying and preventing cyber intrusions, safeguarding critical infrastructure from potential attacks.
