The Indian government has recently issued a tender worth Rs 65,000 crore to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the production of 97 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets. These advanced aircraft, which are an upgraded version of the Tejas aircraft, are set to play a crucial role in enhancing the operational readiness of the Indian Air Force (IAF) by replacing its aging fleet of MiG aircraft.

The tender, announced by the Defence Ministry, provides HAL with a three-month window to respond. This procurement initiative underscores the government's commitment to promoting indigenous manufacturing and strengthening the country's defense sector. It is anticipated that the production of these fighter jets will not only benefit HAL but also provide opportunities for small and medium enterprises across the nation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been actively advocating for the revitalization of HAL, which has resulted in the company securing contracts for the production of various indigenous military hardware, including fighter aircraft, helicopters, and engines. PM Modi's symbolic gesture of flying in the trainer variant of the indigenous fighter aircraft highlighted the government's support for indigenous defense manufacturing.

The decision to purchase 97 additional LCA Mark 1A fighter jets was initially revealed by Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari during a visit to Spain, where he outlined India's ambitious plans to bolster its fleet of indigenous fighter aircraft. This procurement follows a previous order for 83 LCA Mark1A aircraft, with the first delivery expected to occur in the coming weeks.

The LCA Mark 1A represents a significant advancement over its predecessors, boasting enhanced avionics and radar capabilities. With over 65% local content, these fighter jets epitomize the government's emphasis on indigenization in defense production. The increased indigenous content not only reduces dependency on foreign suppliers but also contributes to the growth of the domestic defense industry.

In addition to the procurement of LCA Mark 1A aircraft, HAL is also on track to secure contracts for over 200 LCA Mark 2s and a similar number of fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft. The announcement of the tender has had a positive impact on the market, with HAL's shares trading significantly higher on April 12, registering a 2.18% increase and closing at Rs 3,643.
