Mediazona, in collaboration with the BBC's Russian Service, has been meticulously compiling a list of confirmed soldier deaths, drawing on open-source data from official reports, media accounts, and satellite images of cemeteries. This list, which includes names of the deceased, is an attempt to provide a more accurate picture of the human cost of the war, which has often been downplayed or obscured by official Russian channels.

As of August 30, Mediazona has identified 66,471 Russian soldiers who have been killed in Ukraine. This marks a significant increase of over 4,600 names in just the past four weeks, a surge that the organization attributes not to recent battlefield developments, but rather to a backlog of death reports that are only now being confirmed.

The distribution of these casualties is not uniform across Russia. The southern republic of Bashkortostan, which has a significant Muslim population, has suffered the highest number of deaths, with 2,578 confirmed fatalities. The dead also span a wide range of ages, but the most represented age group is 33-35 years, accounting for nearly 6,900 deaths.

In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died since the war began, a number that reflects the heavy toll the conflict has taken on both sides.
