How 5 Million US Weapons Helped Ukraine Fight Russia Before Trump’s Pause
The United States has been a vital force behind Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression, supplying an immense arsenal of military aid worth $65.9 billion since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. This support provided Kyiv with critical firepower, enabling it to push back against Russian advances. However, with Donald Trump ordering a halt to this assistance, Ukraine now faces an uncertain future.
Air Defense: Shielding Ukraine from Russian Attacks
Russia’s relentless missile and drone strikes have made air defense a top priority for Ukraine. The US delivered some of its most advanced systems to counter these threats, including three Patriot missile batteries and 12 NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems), both crucial in intercepting incoming attacks. More than 3,000 Stinger anti-aircraft missiles also bolstered Ukraine’s ability to target low-flying threats, while advanced radar systems enhanced its detection and interception capabilities. Artillery and Missiles: Powering the Frontlines
Artillery fire remains at the core of Ukraine’s battlefield strategy. The US contributed over 200 155mm howitzers and a staggering three million rounds of ammunition, allowing Ukrainian forces to maintain pressure on Russian positions. Additionally, more than 40 HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems) were delivered, enabling precision strikes on enemy targets. Anti-tank capabilities were also significantly enhanced with over 10,000 Javelin missiles and 120,000+ anti-vehicle weapons, essential in countering Russian armored offensives.
Tanks and Armored Vehicles: Strengthening Ground Operations
While the US refrained from supplying combat aircraft, it provided Ukraine with powerful ground assets. This included 31 Abrams tanks, the most advanced heavy tanks in the US military, as well as 45 Soviet-designed T-72B tanks, familiar to Ukrainian forces. Over 300 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles and more than 5,000 Humvees further reinforced Ukraine’s mobility and protection on the battlefield. These armored vehicles have been critical in launching counterattacks and withstanding Russian offensives.
Drones and Aircraft: Enhancing Reconnaissance and Strikes
Drones have revolutionized modern warfare, and Ukraine benefited significantly from US-supplied Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). The country received Switchblade, Phoenix Ghost, and Scan Eagle drones, which provided real-time intelligence and precision strike capabilities. Additionally, 20 Mi-17 helicopters were delivered, alongside High-speed Anti-Radiation Missiles (HARMs) designed to target Russian air defenses. These assets allowed Ukrainian forces to conduct effective aerial operations and disrupt enemy positions.

With Trump’s decision to freeze military aid, Ukraine faces significant challenges. Its war effort has heavily depended on continuous US support, and any disruption could weaken its battlefield momentum. While limited deliveries of critical munitions approved under the Biden administration are still ongoing, there are no guarantees for future shipments.
Kyiv may now have to seek increased assistance from European allies or adjust its strategy based on available resources.
