Hanwha Aerospace Begins Production of Laser Air Defense System

South Korea is making significant strides in its defense capabilities with the launch of a new laser-based anti-aircraft weapon system. Hanwha Aerospace, a prominent South Korean defense firm, has started the production of this advanced system, following a contract signed in late June with the Defence Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).


This KRW100 billion (approximately USD72.5 million) contract signifies a monumental leap in military technology. The 'Laser Based Anti-Aircraft Weapon Block-I' systems are set to be delivered to the Republic of Korea (RoK) Armed Forces later this year. The development of this system began in 2019, backed by an investment of KRW87.1 billion (around USD63 million). DAPA has described the Block-I system as a "new-concept future weapon system" that employs a light-source laser generated from an optical fiber to neutralize aerial targets. The silent, ammunition-free operation relies solely on electricity, making it an exceptionally cost-effective defense solution. Each firing costs a mere KRW2,000, emphasizing the system's economic efficiency.

"If the output is improved in the future, it could become a game-changing asset on the battlefield, capable of responding to aircraft and ballistic missiles."
