Hamas Chief in Cairo for Talks as Truce Prospects Dim with Israel

Defense News, Hamas Israel War :- The leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, has come to Cairo to talk with Egyptian officials. This comes after mediators mentioned that chances of a new truce with Israel are not looking good.

Haniyeh, based in Qatar, who heads Hamas's political bureau, is having discussions with Egyptian officials about the political and on-the-ground situations. They're also talking about efforts to stop the fighting, help the citizens, and achieve the goals of the Palestinian people.

Despite several meetings last week with both Israeli and Hamas negotiators, mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and the US couldn't make progress in stopping the ongoing four months of intense fighting.

The Qatari Prime Minister expressed his concern at the Munich Security Conference, saying that the recent pattern is not very promising.

Haniyeh, in a statement, reiterated Hamas' demands, even though some have been called "delusional" by the Israeli Prime Minister. These demands include a ceasefire, Israel withdrawing from Gaza, ending the blockade on the territory, and providing safe shelter for displaced Palestinian civilians.

Israel has promised to eliminate Hamas in response to an attack on October 7 that led to the deaths of 1,160 people, mostly civilians, according to official Israeli figures. In retaliation, Israel's offensive has resulted in the deaths of 29,195 people in Gaza, mainly women and children, as reported by the Hamas-run territory's health ministry.
