Germany to Acquire 20 Additional Eurofighter Jets from Airbus to Strengthen Defense
Germany is set to purchase 20 more Eurofighter jets from Airbus to enhance its defense capabilities, as announced by Chancellor Scholz at the Berlin Air Show.
Germany is set to purchase an additional 20 Eurofighter jets from Airbus, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced at the International Air Show in Berlin. The new order, scheduled before the 2025 general elections, follows a previous order of 38 jets in 2020 aimed at replacing the aging Tornado aircraft fleet.
Chancellor Scholz emphasized the country's commitment to the Eurofighter program, not just for national defense but also in terms of potential exports. He highlighted the importance of maintaining production capabilities at Airbus's Eurofighter factory in Manching, Bavaria.
This decision aligns with Germany’s increased defense spending in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Chancellor Scholz has announced a 100-billion-euro ($109 billion) special budget to bolster military stocks. Furthermore, Germany aims to meet NATO’s defense spending target of two percent of GDP starting in 2024, addressing previous criticisms from allies regarding its defense expenditures.
