Germany Invests in Reusable Hypersonic Spaceplane for Defense and Research

Germany is making a significant leap in hypersonic technology with a new investment in a fully reusable hypersonic spaceplane. POLARIS Spaceplanes, a German aerospace company, has been awarded a contract by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) to design a two-stage hypersonic research vehicle. The agreement also includes potential follow-up options for manufacturing and flight testing, signaling Germany’s commitment to advancing high-speed aerospace technology.

The planned vehicle will feature a horizontal takeoff and landing system, making it a versatile platform for hypersonic research. It is primarily designed to serve as a testbed for both defense and scientific applications. Additionally, when equipped with an expendable upper stage, it can function as a small-satellite launcher, expanding its utility beyond experimental purposes.

Hypersonic technology, which allows vehicles to travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5, is increasingly becoming a key focus for global defense and space agencies.
