In a recent hearing before the House Armed Services Committee, Gen. Christopher Cavoli, the head of US European Command, delivered a stark assessment of the military situation in Ukraine. He revealed that for every artillery shell fired by Ukrainian forces, Russian invaders respond with five. This significant firepower advantage poses a grave threat to Ukraine's ability to defend itself.

Cavoli emphasized the critical need for increased support from the United States, warning that without additional ammunition and weapons, the artillery imbalance could worsen to ten to one within weeks. He underscored the vital role of American assistance, acknowledging Ukraine's dependence on US support for its defense.

The delay in passing a $60-billion supplemental bill for Ukraine by the US Congress has raised concerns about the country's ability to withstand Russia's offensive. Some American lawmakers prioritize domestic priorities, including border security, over foreign aid.

As a result of limited munitions, Ukraine has been forced to ration its supplies, leaving its forces at times unable to effectively respond to Russian attacks. This situation has raised alarm among US officials, including Army Secretary Christine Wormuth, who expressed deep concern about the risk of further territorial losses and potential breakthroughs by Russian forces.

If Ukraine's ammunition stocks are depleted, Cavoli warned of devastating consequences for the country's military, society, and economy, with Russian attacks posing a severe threat to its stability and security.
